Asphaltite or Gilsonite???

The title of the article is asphaltite, but every other mention of it uses gilsonite. Which one are we deciding on using? SolarCygnet (talk) 05:37, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

This was the first article I ever created. I used the term "Gilsontite,"as that is what I knew. Now it seems "aspaltite" is a more general term.--PaulinSaudi (talk) 13:53, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Gilsonite is a registered trademark of the American Gilsonite Co. Since the company was the first and really only major player in the market for decades, "Gilsonite" became the predominant term user for the substance for quite some time. "Asphaltite" is a more descriptive term from a geological or materials-science standpoint. Pterrordactyl (talk) 20:33, 25 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Reference to power station

Known as asfaltit in Turkish, it is burnt in Şırnak Silopi power station, a coal fired power station in Turkey.

@Pterrordactyl I think it's alright. the rest of the article doesn't really emphasize anywhere the fact that it can be a useful source of fuel. before reading that line, I figured it was only used as an industrial mineral and not as a fossil fuel. Geological creation of asfaltite?

How is asfaltite created geologically? I assumed it was deposition/metamorphosis like coal or oil, but then the article says it's been found on Ceres (!?!) Does anyone have hints to sources? RickD88 (talk) 18:45, 5 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Asphaltite/Gilsonite vs Natural Bitumen/Bituminous Sands vs Crude Oil/Synthetic Derived Asphaltenes/Bitumen

I have been reading up on this type of stuff a good bit recently due to it’s relevance in Japanning / Japan Black , and modern Bitumenous Paints / Coatings (typically used for weatherproofing buried Culverts etc

So SUPPOSEDLY Asphalt is the same as Bitumen which consists of Asphaltenes and Maltenes

I’m about to go dig for papers etc, but while SUPPOSEDLY “Gilsonite” / “Asphaltum” is different enough to warrant an impact on recipes etc, surely it can’t be THAT different (ie it just contains some more trace gasoline/diesel fractions thinning it down etc), or does it contain Coal type Elemental Carbon etc or other Ash Content minerals etc? Did a BIT of reading.

Here is a patent referring to “Asphalt” and “Gilsonite” as separate things, the ratio of which can be varied for different properties etc; US Patent #2752264A

Then, it isn’t a proper scientific paper, BUT this page mentions “Usage of gilsonite resin Gilsonite usage refers to the fraction of Gilsonite that is dissolved when finely ground gilsonite is contacted with 20 volumes of hot heptane at 80 solution is filtered through a 0.8 micron filter. Maltene-enriched fractions of gilsonite, such as ER-140 and ER-115, have a weight ratio of maltenes to asphaltenes of greater than about 6; preferably greater than about 15; most preferably these resins are substantially free of asphaltenes, i.e., less than 2 wt. % asphaltenes. Moreover these resins are also substantially free of ash. Maltene-enriched ER resins as defined herein have softening points below about 140 relative to natural uintaite; they have at least 50% fewer asphaltenes than natural gilsonite, preferably at least 75% fewer, and more preferably at least 90% fewer.”

So the Maltene aspect may be the important characteristic. Also name dropped ANOTHER term to throw in the terminology hell mix, “uintaite”

“ Gilsonite using in printing ink Gilsonite usage ER resins are “engineered resins”; the term “ER resin” or “Gilsonite ER resin”, as used herein, means a purified fraction of uintaite. These fractions are substantially enriched in maltenes or Asphaltens relative to natural uintaite. Merely dissolving uintaite in a solvent in which it is soluble (i.e., a solvent that dissolves greater than about 90% of the uintaite) and filtering this solution does not produce a purified fraction of uintaite as defined herein. Such a simple filtration process does not substantially change the asphaltene to maltene ratio from that of natural uintaite. Therefore it does not produce the asphaltene-enriched and maltene-enriched purified fraction of uintaite useful in this invention.”
