  • Source:
5x expanded by Arconning (talk). Number of QPQs required: 1. Nominator has 62 past nominations.

Arconning (talk) 02:44, 12 July 2025 (UTC).Reply

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
    QPQ: Done.

Overall: The article was 5x expanded and is long enough. Source verifies hook. No copyvio detected. Hook is interesting and cited. I don't see any issues here. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 04:47, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Myself, and I imagine I'm not alone, don't find hooks of the type '... that X worked at Y, when they did Z?' to be interesting. Is there nothing more interesting that can be said of the subject? TarnishedPathtalk 06:39, 3 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

    Pinging @Arconning and WikiOriginal-9: for awareness.--Launchballer 22:18, 3 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I agree. It's hooky when there's an odd or amusing throughline between the things, but just working someplace basic isn't interesting, especially since Olympians are supposed to be amateurs anyway. PMC (talk) 02:58, 4 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
    @Launchballer: @TarnishedPath: Some other hooks: Arconning (talk) 12:13, 4 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
    • "...that Anju Jason is the first Marshallese athlete to qualify for the Olympics?"
    • "...that taekwondo practitioner Anju Jason was paid by Panda Express throughout his duration at the 2008 Summer Olympics?"

@Arconning, is this person notable? Of the three references used in the article, only the NYTIMES has WP:SIGCOV on him. The two olympedia references do not contain SIGCOV. TarnishedPathtalk 12:24, 4 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

    • @TarnishedPath: Here's some more sources: I'll add them in a few as I'm going on a wikibreak.
@Arconning: Please note that the nomination times out in a week, so please address any remaining concerns ASAP if you do not want this to be rejected. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:56, 4 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually, this is under 5 July at TM:TDYK, so this times out today. I also wouldn't promote either of the new proposed hooks.--Launchballer 10:25, 5 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Launchballer: The article was nominated on July 12, so if we are going by nomination date, this doesn't time out for another week. It might be work waiting a day or two to see if Arconning will respond to the above, but if not, this can be timed out. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 12:08, 5 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
    What's needed here? BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:21, 5 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@BeanieFan11: Significant coverage for Jason was lacking in the references. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:08, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's up to you, but there is an existing discussion over at WT:DYK regarding pruning the oldest open discussions that is relevant here. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:40, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Narutolovehinata5: It took me like 30 seconds to find several in-depth stories on him. Is that all? BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:42, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
They have to be added to the article, for one. The nom said that coverage existed, the problem was that they were not able to add them to the article before they went on break. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:45, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
    I already added them to the article. BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:47, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. @TarnishedPath: Does this seem good to go now? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 22:50, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@BeanieFan11 and @BeanieFan11, when I asked previously if the subject was actually notable, that was off the back of me going into the article and looking if there is anything more interesting than what had been proposed. Looking at Honolulu Star-Advertiser source from 6 Aug 2008 (https://www.newspapers.com/article/honolulu-star-advertiser/180556645/) it states a) that he was one of the first Marshallese to compete in the Olympics and that he almost retired from taekwondo due to lack of competitive opportunities. If those two items were included in a hook it would be more interesting than what's previously been proposed. However, the article currently states that he was the first Marshallese to compete in the Olympics, when the Star-Advertiser states one of the first and the fact about him almost retiring isn't presently in the article. TarnishedPathtalk 23:13, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Well, its in the article now. Are you good with something like ... that Anju Jason nearly quit taekwondo before he became one of the first Olympians for the Marshall Islands? Personally I think the Panda Express is very interesting as well, especially if worded like e.g. ... that Anju Jason was a Panda Express employee – and an Olympic taekwondo practitioner? BeanieFan11 (talk) 23:37, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
approved only for the hook which states that Anju nearly quit taekwondo before representing the Marshall Islands. TarnishedPathtalk 23:43, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
