Proposed merge with Warning buzzer
[edit]See Talk:Warning buzzer#Merge for an active discussion. <<< SOME GADGET GEEK >>> (talk) 14:33, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Where does Warning system fit in to this? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:14, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- I agree that a redirect from Warning buzzer to Alarm device sounds like a good idea. Warning buzzer had been proposed for deletion, but I declined prod. IMO it could be a straight redirect rather than a merge; there really isn't anything at the article worth merging. --MelanieN (talk) 02:13, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Multiple issues with lead section
[edit]I have tagged this articles as having multiple issues, particularly with the lead section. Basically the article is all lead and almost no article. While the fist sentence is adequate, it then fails to distinguish between an alarm device and an alarm that the device generates, but merely goes on to provide a list of devices without really explaining their purposes or generic methods for alerting to an alarm situation. The redirected terms Alarum and Alarm are not explained here nor how these are connected with alarm devices. Consequently one wants to go back and write separate articles for those terms rather than expanding on them here, which other editors have decided is the place for this to happen. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:57, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
- Alarm and Alarum are now explained. Three following paragraphs after the first one moved to separate sections and expanded upon. Lead section now two sentences that may need to be copied and expanded upon on the overall article. Some citation clean-up tags added, too, as suggestions for some additional starting points for citing sources. While some issues resolved, multiple issues still remain. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 04:17, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Alarum
[edit]The term Alarum appears many times as stage directions in plays by William Shakespeare. Yet this term, which is redirected here, is not explained here when it should be. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:57, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
- Now explained. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 04:09, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Alarm
[edit]The purposes of having a device that detects an alarm situation and alerts people that an alarm condition exists is not discussed. Nor are the types of alarm or the level of alarm that should be induced. Additionally, human responses to an alarm situation, alarm activation, automated responses, preparation, procedures, plans, laws, equipment, design protocols and standards, historical events and instances of failure can all be expanded upon. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:57, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
Particular corporate standards
[edit]There was a passage on "various companies developed their own standards regarding alarms". I believe it would be a great idea to provide some examples of such standards once. I really expected to see some there why was reading that section Hulia Today (talk) 11:04, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Requested move 23 September 2026
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. Editors agree that Alarm is primary and to favor concision over other arguments. The alternative proposal Alarm (device) gained some support but not a substantial enough amount for a move to it. Expansion of the article to a broader scope is up to editorial discretion. Alarm device → Alarm – per WP:CONCISE. Currently, Alarm is a redirect to Alarm device, and before an apparent bold page move performed by an editor in 2011, it was the name of this article. The Alarm (disambiguation) page is formatted with this as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC (which is proper if this is really a proper primary topic). But as long as this is considered a primary topic, there is no need to include the extra word in the title – the redirect and the article should be swapped – reverting the page move. If we don't think this is a proper WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for "Alarm" (and I am open to that possibility), then something else should be done, but either way, some action is needed, so let's discuss it. — BarrelProof (talk) 15:36, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 17:21, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose Surprise is an alternate primary topic, i.e. "He was alarmed to hear it". Alarm (disambiguation) should be moved to primary instead. I'd support an alternate move to Alarm (device) because "alarm device" is not even close to satisfying WP:NATURAL as a lesser used but still somewhat commonly used name. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 19:23, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- I sort of get what you mean, but please note that "alarmed" is not "alarm", and I don't think surprise is a very common meaning for alarm. I also see that you agree that the current title is not desirable. — BarrelProof (talk) 13:24, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support or move to Alarm (device) as suggested above as the current title doesn't pass WP:NATURAL. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:56, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support, and think it is doubtful many searching for "alarm" will be seeking at article about surprise. A possible broader topic that would include this article's topic, but could also encompass things other than devices is Alarm (signal); however, I'm not sure such an article exists, and even if it did the device would still, I think, be the primary topic for the word "alarm". Weak support for Alarm (device) over the current title, but prefer no disambiguation. HierophantOfOmens (talk) 23:04, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- Ha...well, it seems Alarm signal does exist, but it is only about its use by animals as a form of communication. And there's an open RM on that page, too. HierophantOfOmens (talk) 23:09, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support per nom. "Device" is not needed here. SnowFire (talk) 23:43, 27 September 2026 (UTC)
- Support. I suppose the rationale for the current setup is WP:PRECISION. There is a distinction between the devices (fire alarms, alarm clocks, and the like) and the noise or other 'signal' that they produce. Alarm can be a shorthand for the devices or can refer to their 'signals'. It doesn't make much sense to cover them separately. This article devotes substantial coverage to response to alarms and false alarms, and other topics which are much more about the signal than the device. This is a sensible way to cover this and makes the current title arguably over-precise. The article should continue to point out the sometimes distinction between alarm device and the more expanded meaning of alarm. —Myceteae🍄🟫 (talk) 23:27, 29 September 2026 (UTC)
