The PK-83 is an indigenous 500 kg (1,102 lb) low-drag, general-purpose (LDGP) steel-cased aircraft bomb manufactured by the Air Weapons Complex (AWC) and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).[1] The munition is a licensed local production variant of the American Mark 83 bomb, optimized to meet local climate storage specifications and integrated across the frontline strike fleet of the PAF.
Design and Description
[edit]Development of the PK-83 was initiated by the Air Weapons Complex as part of Pakistan's defense self-reliance program following the establishment of domestic ordnance facilities in 1992.[2] Built with a thick, forged-steel aerodynamic casing to reduce air resistance on high-speed external weapon pylons, its structural configuration allows for optimal fragmentation dispersal upon impact.
The main explosive cavity is filled with roughly 202 kg (445 lb) of high-grade explosive compounds, generally Tritonal or Composition B, which balance blast pressure energy and target casing penetration.[1] Triggering is managed by point-detonating or delay mechanical nose fuzes, as well as electronic airburst or proximity fuzes engineered natively by AWC.[3]

Precision Guidance Integration
[edit]The PK-83 acts as the foundational warhead element for medium-weight precision-guided munition (PGM) standoff kits managed by Global Industrial & Defence Solutions (GIDS):[3]
- Azb-83 – A specialized extended-range precision kit built to engage high-value static ground assets and fortified bunkers using the PK-83 warhead body.
- Range Extension Kit (REK) – A standalone wing glide assembly that converts standard gravity models into precision satellite-guided standoff weapons with terminal range capabilities up to 50-60 km away from the release coordinate grid.
Deployment and Operational History
[edit]The PK-83 is widely issued to frontline tactical flight wings and is fully compatible with standard heavy NATO-style suspension systems. Primary delivery platforms include:
- CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder – Utilized for heavy-payload strike duties.
- General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon
- Dassault Mirage III & Dassault Mirage 5 – Extensively deployed during tactical long-range deep strike missions.[2]
The munition is a standard inventory asset for defensive deterrence and internal security reinforcement drills conducted along territorial borders.[1]
