Mount Torompupu (Indonesian: Gunung Torompupu), also known as Bulu Torompupu or Lompopana, is a mountain located in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.[1] With an elevation of approximately 2,495 metres (8,186 ft) above sea level, it is one of the highest mountains in Central Sulawesi.[1][2] The mountain is situated in Desa Salua, Kulawi District, and is part of the Gawalise mountain range.[2][3]

Mount Torompupu is known for its rich biodiversity and has been the site of several recent scientific discoveries, including new species of beetles and spiders.[4][5] The mountain's remote location and steep terrain have helped preserve its natural forest cover, making it an important area for biodiversity conservation.[6]

Geography

[edit source]

Mount Torompupu is situated in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, approximately 90 kilometres from the provincial capital of Palu.[2][3] The mountain is part of the Gawalise mountain range, which extends across the western part of Central Sulawesi.[3]

The mountain has a prominence of 1,681 metres (5,515 ft), making it one of the most prominent peaks in Central Sulawesi.[1]

Ecology

[edit source]

Mount Torompupu is known for its rich biodiversity and well-preserved forest cover. The mountain's remote location and steep terrain have limited human disturbance, allowing natural forest ecosystems to remain intact.[6] A study comparing forest cover loss between Mount Torompupu and Mount Galang found that Torompupu experienced no forest cover loss at sampled sites between 2015 and 2018, while Galang experienced significant loss at lower elevations.[6]

The mountain's slopes are covered with tropical rainforest, with vegetation changing with altitude. At higher elevations, the forest is characterised by mossy cloud forest, while lower elevations feature lowland tropical rainforest.[6]

Mount Torompupu has been the site of several recent scientific discoveries. In 2025, researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) discovered two new species of tortoise beetles (Chrysomelidae) on the mountain: Thlaspidula gandangdewata and Thlaspidula sarinoi.[4][5] The specimens were collected from Gunung Torompupu and Gunung Gandangdewata in Sulawesi.[4][5]

Another new species, the snout beetle Trigonopterus sarinoi sp. nov., was also described from Mount Torompupu.[7]

A study on spider communities found that Mount Torompupu had higher species diversity than Mount Galang, which is more urbanised and disturbed.[6] The mountain's sites had a higher overlap of various species of spiders due to the lack of human disturbance and higher forest cover.[6]

Recreation

[edit source]

Mount Torompupu is a destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts, though it remains relatively remote and less visited compared to other peaks in Central Sulawesi.[2][3]

Hiking

[edit source]

The climb to the summit is considered challenging due to the steep terrain and remote location.[2] The starting point for the climb is in Desa Salua, Kulawi District, Sigi Regency.[2] The trail passes through dense forest and offers views of the surrounding Gawalise mountain range.[3]

The mountain is accessible from Palu, the provincial capital, which is approximately 90 kilometres away.[2][3]
