Mount Saran (Indonesian: Gunung Saran), also known locally as Bukit Saran, is a mountain located in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.[1][3] It rises to an elevation of 1,741 metres (5,712 ft) above sea level and has a prominence of 1,558 metres (5,112 ft), making it one of the most prominent peaks in West Kalimantan.[1][2] The mountain is notable for its steep, almost-vertical cliffs near the summit.[1][3]

Geography

[edit]

Mount Saran is located in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo. The mountain is situated near the village of Riam Batu and the lesser peak known as Bukit Kujau (1,308 m) lies to the north.[1][3] The closest airport is in Sintang, but the trailhead is still over three hours away by motorbike from the oil palm plantation junction called Simpang Pandan.[1]

The mountain is surrounded by flat land largely used for oil palm plantations, which means Bukit Saran and Bukit Kujau can rarely be seen from the main roads near Nanga Pinoh and Sintang.[1][3]

Ecology

[edit]

The forests surrounding Mount Saran are part of the tropical rainforest ecosystem of Borneo, home to various endemic flora and fauna.[3] The area is known for its rich biodiversity, including hornbills, which can be heard flapping their wings above the river crossings on the hiking trail.[1] The mountain's remote location has helped preserve its natural habitat.[3]

Recreation

[edit]

Mount Saran is a destination for trekkers and nature explorers, known for its challenging and extreme hiking trail.[4] The climb typically takes 7–8 hours to reach the summit, with the trail passing through dense tropical forest with large trees and moss-covered roots.[4]

Hiking route

[edit]

The usual starting point for the climb is at Lebuk Lantang in Riam Batu, which takes over three hours to reach by motorbike from Simpang Pandan, near Sintang's airport.[1] The first part of the journey follows dusty plantation tracks, which can be very slow going in the rainy season.[1] Once through the plantation, hikers reach the village of Ansok, where the villagers are actively promoting tourism as a more responsible means of earning money than oil palm plantations.[1]

From Ansok, the track follows the Tempunak River towards Riam Batu, the gateway to Mount Saran.[1] At Lebuk Lantang (156 m), hikers can look up towards the summit cliffs. The trail leads along a cement pathway beside the river, past accommodation buildings for hikers, and then enters the forest.[1]

The trail features steep slopes, narrow paths along ravines, and sections requiring rope-assisted climbing over large boulders. The trail crosses the Sungai Batulicin river at 238 m and passes a beautiful waterfall at 667 m, just less than halfway up to the campsite.[1] There are several resting spots along the way, and hikers may encounter endemic insects and lizards.[4]

From the summit, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding West Kalimantan landscape, with misty mornings and cool air.

Local guides

[edit]

Because the trail is vague in places and there are many junctions, local guides are essential for finding the trailhead and navigating the route.[1][3] The mountain is considered sacred by some local communities, and trekkers are advised to seek permission from local customary leaders before climbing.
