It should be mentioned how to add a discussion link to a page.

The convention is to insert the text

----
[[talk:How_to_start_a_page|/Talk]]

at the bottom of the page. The resulting link will point to a /Talk page which is specific to the page containing the link.

Exactly so. But it helps if you keep discussion fairly tightly related to the main page. Mathematicians usually get distracted by abtruse discussions of mediaeval history on pages related to Godel and historians suffer similarly with conversations about the nth value of pi in sub-pages relative to illuminated manuscripts and the like :-). If you really must have lengthy discussions best to host them on a talk page as a sub-page of your personal homepage such as talk:sjc sjc

I am surprised that the simplest method of starting a page, going to the url of a nonexistent page, a la www.wikipedia.com/wiki/nonexistent is not included on this page.



I can see that it is good for people to start pages from within other articles, weaving the web, and I also imagine that making pages this way would lead to a lot of garbage pages with garbage pathnames.

However, most of the pages I work on are already started, but it is tedious to create #REDIRECT pages using any of the methods documented on this page, so I just do it using the browser and everything is fine. The same goes for reorganizing topics, adding overviews, etc., just create a blank entry and go.

Should this method be documented on this page? Or is this some kind of taboo? I haven't been doing wiki very long, so I'm asking. It seems an obvious thing for an application to do. I didn't want to go ahead and add to the page without checking with older hands. Ortolan88

Well, I'm no old hand, but the page says in no uncertain terms that :

  • Yes, it can be done that way
  • Yes, it is acceptable
  • Yes, it is a kludgy way of going about it

It sure does work, though. Technically, I see no reason not to do it this way, but it may create issues of style/orphaned pages/duplicate pages if people jump in too hastily. For example, there's no page at Boards of Canada. It's at Boards Of Canada. As long as people search before creating duplicate entries and have something useful to contribute, all should be well. - Tzaquiel 20:13 Jan 3, 2003 (UTC)

It's an experiment; a longer, more informative message has been frequently suggested, and I say it's about time we tried it. Over the next couple of days, count the number of pages that are created that are empty or contain only "test" or "what's this" or the new-page message. Compare with the count of pages deleted as "newbie experiments" from the previous few days. See if it's gone down. --Brion 05:42 Jan 27, 2003 (UTC)

I've changed the code so that the text is autoselected via JavaScript. It's in CVS, bug Brion if you want it on the live server. --Eloquence 10:02 Jan 27, 2003 (UTC)
At the same time let's start counting the number of 400 byte pages that are created with only that text or a slightly modified version. The text also has a comma so it counts as an article! It would be nice to have javascript delete this text as soon so a cursor touches it. Of course, not everybody has Javascript enabled but I'm pretty sure that over 90% of people visiting us do. The other 10% should be presented with what we have now except for the fact that the software does not create pages with only the intro text (as it was with the old "Describe the new page here". --mav

"If no-one has already made a page on your subject, you can find some related topic (often a general category, like Philosophy or Biology), edit that page, and (in an appropriate place) add the title of the article you want to create between double brackets, [[like this]]. This is not "that" good practice, often the user won't find what he/she looked for..

The question-marks for ghost links are almost nonexistent nowadays (and uneasthetic in my opinion), I'm removing these explanations (In preferences, it is clearly stated that question marks = ghost links..), and also, the average user wouldn't understand what is the "older version of the wiki.." -- Rotem Dan 20:01 Apr 15, 2003 (UTC)

  • go to your browser's address bar and change the link there.

This does work, not too surprisingly, but it might be considered a kludge rather than a real solution by some. And the bad thing is that it doesn't automatically create a link to any other pages, and thus, may lead to creation of orphan (unlinked) pages. The only probable use is to create alternative entries that are only redirects to the proper one.

Note you could also create a temporary work area if you want to create many pages, using the same process, but you should choose a name for this which is very unlikely to be recognised as a word or phrase in the main text, though this is really a deprecated method. People are very likely to use the first method described, so it is most important that this is the recommended method rather than a method with which new contributors will accidentally create orphan pages more likely than not. -- Derek Ross 02:53 May 1, 2003 (UTC)

You'll ruin the demo by creating an article at that title. Some people got confused and thought that to create an article you had to create it at Sample article title and then move it. Martin 12:26 17 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Yes, type the new article name directly in the address bar, like http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/____. Replace "____" with the desired new article name. --Menchi 20:43 Feb 21, 2003 (UTC)
It isn't simple to make an article that is not linked to in another, to discourage "orphans" that aren't linked to. It is best to find a related article and make a link, perhaps in a see also format. Orphans are bad, though, so try not to make them often except redirects and such. Tuf-Kat
That does make the creation of redirects difficult though: it'd be nice to have a quick way to create one or more redirecs to a page. Martin
Edit a page, any page. Add links to your new redirects. Don't save, click SHOW PREVIEW. Take those links. When finished, throw away your previewed page. Tannin

I'd like to know how to add a page that forwards to another page. For example there's no page titled "Poststructuralism". There's one called "Post-Structuralism" but it took a while to figure that out. I know there's a way of creating a "Poststructuralism" page that immediately forwards to "Post-Structuralism" because there are lots of other pages like that. This "How to start a page" page should explain how to make a forwarding page.

I am a newcomer, I need help of unknown origin, and don't know how to go about it. I have made a connection between Newton's, Einstien's, and other's theories and laws, and have theorized. How do I go about,(if possible) using this site to attract attention to assist me in experimentaion of my non-hypothesis of Quantum Gravity. And building the Self Gravitational System/Generator, without someone theiving MY thoughts and running to the patent office. Believe it or not I have found the Railway, if I may, to the substratum of the Universe. And I have no more than a High School Diploma. But the proof has already been published, it is just connecting the dots. I don't want to lay the dots out for the scientific community if I won't get to connect them and be part of stacking the papers. I need a confidential, educated, financial backer, prefferably company based, to endeavor this astronomical advance in the physical understanding of the system of things as we know it. Yet I have now idea how to advertize for my neccessity. Is there any way this site can help me???? Thank you ==

I've noticed there are a lot of links to entries that don't yet exist. I'm not sure if these links are there to encourage people to create these articles or if the links are a mistake. I feel like some links should be edited out but I don't want to do that if they're there for a reason.

New input box

A new input box was added yesterday and I was wondering the usfulness of it. The page doesn't referecnce it. It might be confusing in this context. Maybe put it inline with a new section on ways to create a new article. Kinda like: "entering the name of the article you want to create here:" and then put the box inline. Help namespace

I've used and contributed to this site for almost two years and for some reason all I get now (last few days) when I click on red links is an error message from Nation.com telling me to modify my search (?!). I've tried every method (red link, URL name, Creation page option in the Tutorial) of creating a new page that I know of and all have produced this error message. I can, however, edit existent pages fine. Does anybody have any idea what's going on? I would really like to be able to create new pages. -- Matty j 23:48, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

This page is a mess

There are way too many transclusions and weird boxes on this page. I came here wanting to fix one link to a page that has moved, and I have no idea how to do so. It would be a lot easier to read if it pointed to the meta page rather than trying to duplicate half its content in a weird way. Hello. How do you add a new article/bio about someone when another entry already exists of someone else with the exact same name?

For exmple, if you look up Michael Jackson you see only the entry of pop start Michael Jackson. But what if I wanted to add the talk show host Michael Jackson too?

I know this is possibe, because with the entry "William Smith" you automatically come up with a list of many different William Smiths.

Used to be, when I clicked on a red link in an article (which I often do in order to see search results so I can fix the red link), there was a link to some search results. Now all I see is an edit page and the basic instructions "Before creating your article, please read Wikipedia:Your first article. As you create the article, please provide references to reliable sources. Without sources, the article may be deleted." I want my quick link to search results! The directions clearly say that when I click "Go (try title)" an edit box should come up if the page doesn't already exist...this doesn't happen. This needs to be fixed immediately! All it takes me too is a page of suggestions for my search. 24.164.75.68 (talk) 20:57, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Protecting a page from being created

It is not really possible to protect a page from being created, but one can create a page with a standard text such as in w:en:Template:Deletedpage and protect that page. Note that sometimes a terminology like "This page should not be created." is used even though for the system the page exists. Therefore it is not suitable for demonstrating a link to a non-existing page.

Pages are create-protected all the time; I was actually looking for somewhere to ask if the create protect bans on articles are ever lifted. Daniel Christensen (talk) 18:12, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

That section was correct at one time...but that was a long time ago - I've updated it now. Font question

I just have a font question. Somehow yesterday when I use doing my research the font in the text changed, it is now huge, and I can't figure out how to reset it. I didn't change anything. it so big now I can't focus on the pages. I turned everything off, started over this morning and it's still huge. I have recreated this page at Help:Empty pages as a lot of links were pointing to it in the assumption it was how to edit new articles ( and most editors following these links will be 1st timers]], all previous links have been aimed at the better creating articles links e.g. Wikipedia:Starting an article, the shortcut still points here for now , but I'll try to check for the few cases which really did want to create a new empty article without then creating article content within it Lee∴V (talk • contribs) 01:21, 9 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Update: no use of the shortcut in this sense redirecting to article creation. I have created a new shortcut for the specific use of 'creating a page thats not going to be an article' it is WP:EMPTY, hoe this is all clear and fine, redirecting this page to Wikipedia:starting an article now ...
