The HAFR-2 is a rocket-boosted anti-runway bomb developed and produced in Pakistan. It is utilized by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and serves as a variant or successor to the baseline HAFR-1 munition.[1] The weapon is engineered specifically to target, penetrate, and disable reinforced concrete runways and airfield aprons during air strike operations.[2]

Design and development

The HAFR-2 was engineered by the Air Weapons Complex (AWC) in coordination with the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC). In terms of operational concept, military analysts note functional and design lineage corresponding to the French-designed Matra Durandal anti-runway penetration weapon system.[2] The mechanical layout is optimized to withstand intense kinetic impact loads against hardened surfaces before triggering detonation. Compared to the HAFR-1, the HAFR-2 incorporates iterative updates to its internal propulsion sub-systems or localized payload delivery profiles.[1]

Operational profile

The weapon is designed for low-altitude, high-speed tactical delivery from strike aircraft. Its flight and deployment sequence consists of the following stages:

  • Braking phase: Following release from the aircraft, a rear-mounted retardation parachute deploys. This decelerates the bomb and stabilizes its descent path into a steep, near-vertical downward angle relative to the runway surface.
  • Acceleration phase: Once the proper vertical descent vector is achieved, an internal solid-fuel rocket booster ignites, accelerating the munition to high terminal velocities to ensure kinetic penetration through deep concrete foundations.
  • Detonation phase: After piercing the outer runway layers, a time-delay fuze triggers the high-explosive payload underneath the surface, creating severe subsurface cratering and concrete displacement ("heaving") to prevent rapid repair operations.
