Veloretti is a Dutch bicycle manufacturer headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Founded in 2012 by Ferry Zonder, the company produces city bicycles, electric bicycles, and children's bicycles, distributed through a direct-to-consumer model.[1][2] In 2022, Veloretti was acquired by Pon.Bike, a subsidiary of the Dutch mobility conglomerate Pon Holdings.[3][4]
History
[edit]Founding and early growth
[edit]Veloretti was founded in 2012 by Ferry Zonder in Amsterdam.[1] From the start, it sold directly to consumers through its own website.[1][3] City bicycles and children's bicycles formed the core of its early product range, with the Caféracer among its first models.[1][5]
By the time of its acquisition by Pon in 2022, Veloretti employed 58 people and served customers in 26 European countries, with designs originating in Amsterdam and manufacturing carried out in Europe.[3] The company had a projected turnover of €42 million for that year.[3]
E-bike launch (2021)
[edit]Veloretti's first electric models, the Ivy and Ace, were introduced in June 2021.[6][7] The Ivy featured a step-through frame, while the Ace used a step-over design aimed at urban commuters. Both combined a mid-drive motor with a belt drivetrain, automatic gear shifting, and an integrated navigation and tracking system.[7] The models were initially available in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.[7]
Acquisition by Pon Holdings (2022)
[edit]The acquisition of Veloretti by Pon.Bike, a subsidiary of Pon Holdings, was announced in September 2022.[3][4][8] Pon Holdings, whose cycling portfolio also includes Gazelle, Cannondale, Cervélo, and Santa Cruz, described the move as part of its strategy to expand its presence in the direct-to-consumer e-bike segment.[3][4] Founder Ferry Zonder remained in charge after the acquisition, focused on expanding the brand across Europe.[4][9]
Products
[edit]Veloretti makes three types of bicycle.
Electric bicycles
[edit]The electric range centres on the Ace Two and Ivy Two, which succeeded the original 2021 models.[6][10] Both models use a mid-drive motor, a belt drivetrain, and an integrated battery. A single-speed Lite version followed, as did a Pro variant with automatic gear shifting.[10]
City bicycles
[edit]The non-electric range includes city bicycle models such as the Caféracer, designed for urban commuting.[1][5]
Children's bicycles
[edit]Children's models include balance bikes and single-speed bicycles across multiple size categories.[1]
Design recognition
[edit]The Ace Two and Ivy Two electric models received a Red Dot Design Award in 2023 in the Product Design category, alongside other Dutch cycling brands recognised at the same ceremony.[11][12] The same models received an iF Design Award in the Bicycles category the following year.[13]
Brand collaborations
[edit]In 2022, Veloretti collaborated with Amsterdam-based fashion label Scotch & Soda on a co-branded collection of six bicycles, timed to coincide with the launch of Scotch & Soda's Amsterdam Proof rainwear collection for cyclists.[3][14][15]
