Tom Newlands (born 1980) is a Scottish writer. His debut novel Only Here, Only Now (2024) won the McKitterick Prize, was runner up for the ADCI Prize,[1] and was named Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year.[2]
Early and Personal life
[edit]Newlands was born in Perth,[3] and is neurodivergent.[4][5] He did not attend university.[6] He formerly worked as an art handler and started writing only at the age of 40,[3] when put on furlough during the COVID lockdown. Living in London at the time, he has cited homesickness as inspiring him to start his debut novel.[7] He wrote the first draft in just three months.[8]
Career
[edit]Newland's first novel Only Here, Only Now was published in June 2024 in the U.K,[9] and November 2024 in the U.S.[10] It won the Society of Authors McKitterick prize, was runner up for the Society of Authors ADCI prize, was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize, and was chosen as a fiction book of the year in The Guardian.[11][12] In November 2025 it was named Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year.[13] The book, about a teenager with undiagnosed ADHD, was widely praised for its humour, empathy and vivid prose.[14][15][16][17][18]
In 2024 Newlands spent a year as writer in residence at Bethlem Gallery.[19] He was appointed to the Creative Future Advisory Board in 2025, to help guide the organisation in their support of underrepresented writers.[20] In 2026 he was given a Royal Society of Literature Scriptorium Award,[21] and was named Passa Porta International writer in residence, in collaboration with the National Centre for Writing.[22]
In June 2026 Newlands announced his second novel, Something Like Happiness, set in a fictional Scottish new town.[8]
