Thinkific (incorporated as Thinkific Labs Inc.) is a Canadian software company that provides an online learning platform for businesses and online academies. The company’s software allows users to build, host, and sell courses, communities, and other online learning experiences. Thinkific is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, ticker symbol THNC.
History
Thinkific was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 2012 by Greg Smith, Matt Smith, Miranda Lievers, and Matt Payne. Greg Smith was teaching Law School Admission Test (LSAT) preparation courses and wanted to expand his business online. He found the process difficult and that spawned the concept of a software solution for easily building and selling online courses.[1][2]

In 2016, Thinkific raised a $400,000 USD seed fund led by Canadian VC firm Rhino Ventures to further investment in the platform.[3] Then, in September 2020, Thinkific announced a Series A funding round of approximately $22 million USD led once again by Rhino Ventures.[4][5] The company stated that the funding would be used to expand its product development and market presence. In coverage of the funding round, the Globe and Mail noted that the company was seeing a “growth spurt” as a result of the widespread shift to online education platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]
In April 2021, Thinkific completed an initial public offering and began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol THNC.[7][8][9] The offering raised approximately $184 million CAD, valuing the company at approximately $1.29 billion CAD at the time of its public listing[10], qualifying it as a tech unicorn.
In 2022, Thinkific announced a workforce reduction affecting approximately 100 employees as technology companies adjusted to changing market conditions following the rapid growth experienced during the pandemic period. The layoffs were reported by Canadian business and technology media outlets.[11][12] In January of 2023, they cut another 19 percent of staff.[13] Following these cuts, Thinkific attained positive cash flow for the first time post-IPO in 2024.[14]
In 2024, Thinkific was announced as a launch partner for a Spotify test program in which UK-based Spotify users could consume and purchase courses on the platform.[15][16][17]
Products and services
Thinkific fits into the software category of learning management systems.
Initially launched to serve online course creators, Thinkific expanded its offering to cater to the needs of businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic[18] and in 2025 announced it was focused on upmarket, enterprise organizations moving forward.[19][20]
Thinkific’s platform enables its users to create and sell courses, communities, digital downloads, memberships, coaching programs, and live events.[21][22][23]
It provides other tools including a payments solution, analytics, AI-enabled landing page creation, email automation, branded mobile applications, checkout solutions, and an app store for integrations with tools including HubSpot and Salesforce. It also offers enterprise-targeted features and services like multi-site management, role and permissions customization, SSO, GDPR & data residency support, SCORM compliance, migration services, and priority support. Thinkific is SOC-2 compliant.[24][25]
In February, 2026, the company released an AI teaching assistant called Thinker.[26]
