Susan Jane Lousada (born October 1960) is a British businesswoman and philanthropist. She was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire in 2017 and served as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020. Susan was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire on 7 September 2022.[1].
Early Life, Education, and Career
[edit]Born in Bedfordshire, Susan attended Leeds University where she gained a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Microbiology. She further achieved a PGCE in Translational Medicine from Cranfield University. Married to Simon for over 40 years, they have two children and two grandchildren[2].
Having begun her career in infertility research, Susan and Simon set up a Specialist Matting and Washroom Services Company in 1985, growing the business for several years until its sale in 2007. She has many years’ experience of running a business and continues to serve as a Director of a Property and Investment Company[3]. She has previously Chaired a Research Ethics Committee in Oxford and sat as a Non-Legal Member in the First Tier Tax Tribunal.
Charitable Work
[edit]Susan has been actively involved locally with a particular focus on the education of children and young people. She has previously been a School Governor, Chairman of Bedfordshire NSPCC, a member of the Senior Management Team of Schoolreaders Charity, and served on the Bedfordshire Committee of the East Anglian Air Ambulance. She has also been a Trustee of the Moggerhanger House Preservation Trust[4], President of the Friends of Bedford Hospital, and a Friend of the Higgins (Art Gallery) Bedford. Appointed a Commander of the Order of St John, Susan serves as a member of the Bedfordshire County Council of St John Ambulance.
Shrievalty
[edit]Susan served as High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 2020/2021[5] and, during the Covid lockdowns, spearheaded the provision of over 1,800 digital devices to under-privileged children in the county to help them continue their education online[6][7].
Lieutenancy
[edit]Susan was appointed His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire in September 2022[8][9], having previously served as a Deputy Lieutenant for five years[10]. She has hosted various Royal visits across Bedfordshire[11][12][13][14][15], celebrated and presented National Honours to Bedfordshire residents[16][17], King's Awards for Enterprise to local businesses[18], and King's Award for Voluntary Service to volunteer groups[19] within the county. As Lord-Lieutenant, she is also Keeper of the Rolls and Co-Chair of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee for the appointment of Magistrates in the county[20]. Susan has committed her tenure to promoting social cohesion, fostering mutual respect and understanding, and championing the many individuals, businesses, voluntary organisations and community groups that contribute to Bedfordshire[21]
