S. Sreejith is an Indian Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1996 batch, Kerala cadre. He was promoted to the rank of Director General of Police in July 2026 and serves as Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services in the Government of Kerala.[1]
As an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Sreejith headed the Crime Branch of the Kerala Police, where he supervised the further investigation into the 2017 Malayalam actress assault case.[2][3] He later served as Transport Commissioner of Kerala, a period during which the state's Safe Kerala road-safety programme and its network of AI-assisted traffic enforcement cameras became operational.[4][5]
Early life and education
[edit]Sreejith is from Eranjipalam in Kozhikode district, Kerala. He took a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Sree Narayana College, Chelannur.[citation needed] Before entering the Indian Police Service he worked with All India Radio and subsequently with the Customs department.[citation needed]
Police career
[edit]Sreejith joined the Indian Police Service in 1996 and was allotted to the Kerala cadre.[1] In the earlier part of his career he served as Assistant Superintendent of Police and later as Superintendent of Police in several districts of Kerala, and held postings in the Crime Branch, the Intelligence wing and the state's armed police battalions.[citation needed]
Crime Branch and the actress assault case
[edit]In January 2022, as ADGP in charge of the Crime Branch, Sreejith was named to head the special team constituted to carry out further investigation into the 2017 assault on a Malayalam actress, in which the actor Dileep is an accused, and into a related case alleging a conspiracy to endanger the officers investigating it.[2][3] The team questioned Dileep over several sittings and searched his residence at Aluva under court orders.[6][7] Speaking to reporters during the questioning, Sreejith said the investigators had gathered evidence in the conspiracy case and were continuing to examine further material.[2]
In April 2022 the state government transferred Sreejith out of the Crime Branch and posted him as Transport Commissioner, a reshuffle that drew comment because it came while the two cases were under investigation.[8][3] A petition challenging the transfer was filed in the Kerala High Court by filmmaker Byju Kottarakkara, who contended that the government had acted with an improper motive; in June 2022 a division bench dismissed the petition, holding that it would not interfere in a matter of government policy.[9]
Transport Commissioner
[edit]As Transport Commissioner, Sreejith oversaw the Motor Vehicles Department's Safe Kerala project, under which 726 artificial-intelligence-assisted cameras were installed on state and national highways to detect traffic offences.[5] Ahead of the system going live in April 2023, he set out the categories of violation that would attract penalties in the first phase, including riding without a helmet, use of a mobile telephone while driving, failure to wear seat belts, signal violations and carrying more than two persons on a two-wheeler.[4][10] Shortly after the rollout he told reporters that recorded violations had fallen by close to half in the first days of enforcement, and said the department expected a measurable reduction in fatal road accidents.[11]
Later postings
[edit]Sreejith returned to the Police Headquarters as Additional Director General of Police in 2024.[citation needed] On 31 July 2026 he was promoted to the rank of Director General of Police, in a vacancy arising from the retirement of Nitin Agarwal, and was posted as Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services.[1]
Music
[edit]Alongside his police service Sreejith is a singer, and has recorded playback songs for Malayalam films.[12] In a 2025 interview he said that the demands of his police work limited the time available for music, and that he had initiated a proposal for the formation of a Kerala Police orchestra to make use of musical talent within the force.[12]
