Rumah Biru Kampung Baru, or simply called Rumah Biru, is a traditional Malay house which is located in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur. This house is famous for its original architecture, which is attractively set against the backdrop of the Petronas Twin Towers. It has been the filming location for several films and television shows.[1][2]

In 2024, this house had to be temporarily vacated due to gutter repair work.[3]

History

[edit]

Rumah Biru is placed on Jalan Salleh, next to Kampung Baru East. It has been ageing over 80 years old,[1][2] it was built since around 1940s. Ia menampilkan gaya seni bina rumah tradisional dan moden yang menjadi ciri khas Kampung Baru. Kini, ia masih menjadi milik persendirian penduduk asal yang tinggal di kampung tersebut.

In June 2024, this house is rumored to be demolished to make way for a project to dismantle the trough embedded under the area by the Kuala Lumpur Irrigation and Drainage Department. People felt sad and suggested that this house be removed and reinstalled in the future.[4]

However, one of the heirs of the house named Shafiq Abdullah came forward to explain that the house was not going to be demolished, instead they just asked to relocate to facilitate the project. Homeowners are expected to return within three to four years after the project is completed.[3][5]

This house is built in the long roof style with a mix of modern architecture commonly seen in Kampung Baru. The main structure of the house is almost entirely made of wood, while the roof uses zinc. This house is said to have been originally built higher due to flooding problems before the pillar structure was lowered.[1]

This house does not have a porch. In front of the house, there is a banana comb roof that houses the main door. The exterior of the house is painted in bright blue, which is the main attraction of this house.
