  • Comment: Good work so far on this article. However, unfortunately, in order to prove notability, an article needs to references 2-3 sources which are reliable, independent, secondary sources, which talk about the subject of the Wikipedia article at length. While you have thoroughly referenced the article, as is necessary for biographies of living people, for the purposes of notability, the references from CUHK and other organisations to which Wai-Yan has ties do not count, neither do interviews. The South China Morning Post articles are really strong, especially given how many there are,, however, they only count as one source for notability purposes. If you were able to find just 1 or 2 non-interview articles from another independent media source, then this would be an easy acceptance, however as it stands… Good luck and keep up the hard work. 👍 Absurdum4242 (talk) 07:35, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

Philip Chiu Wai-yan (Chinese: 趙偉仁) is a Hong Kong surgeon and academic currently serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Director of the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center [1][2]. His research focuses on endoluminal robotics and medical technology innovation[3][4][5].

Early life and education

[edit]

Chiu was born in Hong Kong into a family with strong ties to medicine. His father was a doctor[6], and his mother, Professor Ng Yuet Lau, was a nurse who later became an artist.[7] This mix of influences inspired Chiu's passion for painting and helping others through studying medicine.[8][9]

Nurtured in Hong Kong, Chiu received his MBChB from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994 [10] [11]. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2001 [12]and later obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from CUHK in 2009.[13]

Career

[edit]

Chiu began his early career in public hospitals in Hong Kong, including United Christian Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital.[14]

In 2003 he underwent three months of training under Professor Haruhiro Inoue at Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital in Japan to learn endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).[5][15] In the following year, he introduced this ESD technique to Hong Kong to treat patients with early GI cancers.[4][10][16]

In 2005, Chiu joined the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery. [17]He was promoted to Associate Dean (External Affairs) in 2020.[18][19]As Professor Francis Chan indicated his intention to step down as Dean, Chiu was formally appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 2024.[1][20]

Currently, Chiu holds multiple roles including Director of the InnoHK Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center, Cluster Chief of Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgery of the New Territories East Cluster (NTEC)[20][21][22], Director of Endoscopy of Prince of Wales Hospital and NTEC of the Hospital Authority.[23][24]

Research

[edit]

Chiu's primary research areas include oesophageal cancer management, minimally invasive and robotic oesophagectomy[25][26], upper gastrointestinal endoscopic surgery, and endoluminal surgery. [23][27]He has worked closely with engineers from home and abroad to explore novel technologies that could enhance precision in the diagnosis and treatment of early gastrointestinal cancers in the least invasive way possible [5][28][29][30][31], including the use of biohybrid soft microrobots that could navigate complex and narrow luminal spaces.[32][33][34]

Honours and awards

[edit]
  • 2007 – State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, State Council of the PRC[35]
  • 2020 – Spirit of Hong Kong Awards (Innovation)[36][37]
  • 2021 – Outstanding Team Award, Hospital Authority (Prince of Wales Hospital Endoscopy Team)[24]
  • 2023 – Karl-Storz–Harold Hopkins Golden Telescope Award, Hamlyn Symposium (Imperial College London)[20][23]
  • 2024 – Most Innovative Paper of the Year, Endoscopy[38]
  • 2025 – Foreign Member of Academia Europaea[39][40]

Personal life

Chiu is married to Choi Mui-sum, a classmate from medical school,[41] who is a paediatric specialist.[42]
