nARCHITECTS is an American architecture firm based in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 1999 by architects Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang. The firm has received national recognition for projects in housing, cultural institutions, civic infrastructure, and environmentally responsive design.
The firm was awarded the 2023 National Design Award in Architecture by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.[1] It was previously named AIA New York State Firm of the Year in 2017.[2]
History
[edit]nARCHITECTS gained early national attention through Canopy, a 2004 installation at MoMA PS1 in Queens, New York.[3] The firm’s 2007 Switch Building & Gallery in Manhattan was featured in architectural media for its adaptive facade design.[4]
In 2016, the firm completed Carmel Place in Manhattan, New York City's first purpose-built micro-unit apartment building. The project received widespread coverage in architectural publications and was discussed in relation to New York City's housing policy debates.[5][6]
nARCHITECTS collaborated with James Corner Field Operations on the redevelopment of Chicago’s Navy Pier, known as Pierscape (completed 2016), which was covered in international architectural media.[7]
Subsequent projects include the A/D/O Design Center in Brooklyn (2017),[8] the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn, New York (2018),[9] and the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center in Wantagh, New York (2020), a net-zero public facility focused on environmental education.[10]
