MotorXP is a family of proprietary software for the design and analysis of electric machines, developed by the American company MotorXP LLC. The programs combine the finite element method (FEM) with analytical calculation methods and are used to compute the performance of electric motors and generators.[1]

The software has been used in academic research and engineering work, including a NASA feasibility study of an electric aircraft propulsion system[2] and several peer-reviewed publications and theses on electric machine design.[3][4]

Products

[edit]

MotorXP-PM

[edit]

MotorXP-PM is intended for the design and analysis of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and brushless DC (BLDC) machines with surface-mounted or interior permanent magnets.[1] It supports inner- and outer-rotor topologies, automatic winding layout for pole/slot combinations, loss calculation and performance mapping. It is available both as a MATLAB-based application and as a standalone application.

MotorXP-AFM

[edit]

MotorXP-AFM is intended for the electromagnetic design and analysis of axial flux machines with permanent magnets.[1] It uses quasi-three-dimensional finite element modeling and supports stator–rotor, stator–rotor–stator and rotor–stator–rotor topologies, as well as concentrated, distributed and toroidal windings. MotorXP-AFM models can be imported into Simscape Electrical for system-level simulation.[5]

MotorXP-IM

[edit]

MotorXP-IM is a package for the analysis of induction (asynchronous) machines; as of 2026 it is under development.[1]

Analysis methods

[edit]

The programs implement magnetostatic finite element analysis with time-stepping simulation, steady-state and dynamic d–q analysis accounting for magnetic saturation and cross-saturation, and a hybrid method combining finite element and d–q computation to accelerate calculations.[1]

Integration

[edit]

MotorXP is listed in the MathWorks partner product catalog (MATLAB Connections),[6] and MotorXP-AFM models can be imported into Simscape Electrical.[5]

Use in research

[edit]

MotorXP has been used in scientific and engineering work, including:

  • a NASA feasibility study of an all-electric 150-passenger aircraft, in which the axial flux motor was designed using MotorXP-AFM;[2]
  • a master's thesis at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where MotorXP-AFM was used for finite element validation of an axial flux machine;[4]
  • a peer-reviewed paper in Proceedings on Engineering Sciences, in which MotorXP-PM was used for the electromagnetic analysis of a synchronous motor;[3]
  • work at Imperial College London on electric-vehicle drivetrain optimization, using a published MotorXP efficiency map.[7]
