MUMU is a Filipino-American supernatural adventure franchise created by Choz Belen. Drawing from the rich folklore, mythology, and history of the Philippines, the series reimagines legendary creatures known collectively as mumu within a modern coming-of-age fantasy. Blending action, horror, comedy, mystery, and heartfelt family drama, MUMU follows a group of young heroes as they uncover a hidden world where ancient legends are real and the fate of both humanity and the spirit realm hangs in the balance.
Originally released as a trilogy of graphic novels, MUMU has expanded into a broader story universe spanning multiple adventures, mythological creatures, and interconnected lore inspired by indigenous Filipino traditions.
Premise
[edit]The series follows Filipino-American siblings Ren, Riz, and Raym, who travel to the Philippines expecting an ordinary summer vacation with their grandparents in Bicol. Instead, they discover that the monsters from Filipino folklore—once dismissed as bedtime stories—are living beings hiding in plain sight.
Together with their friends Benjie (an aspiring boxer), Nene (his little sister), and Pooty (Riz' bff), the group becomes entangled in an ancient conflict that stretches back centuries. Their adventures lead them through haunted forests, forgotten temples, hidden mountain villages, enchanted islands, supernatural prisons, and the mystical realm of Anito, where spirits, ancient heroes, and mythical creatures coexist beyond the human world.
As the series progresses, the children evolve from frightened outsiders into capable protectors, confronting increasingly dangerous supernatural forces while uncovering long-buried secrets surrounding Philippine mythology, pre-colonial history, and their own destinies.

Setting

Familiar locations—including bustling barrios, volcanic landscapes, dense rainforests, coastal islands, rice terraces, caves, waterfalls, and ancient balete forests—are woven together with hidden supernatural realms existing just beyond ordinary human perception.
The series introduces original fantasy locations such as Anito, a sacred spirit world where time, nature, and mythology intertwine, alongside forgotten civilizations and ancient sanctuaries inhabited by legendary beings.
Anito
[edit]Anito is the primordial spirit realm in MUMU, existing parallel to the mortal Philippines as the source of ancient magic and supernatural life. Timeless and ever-changing, it is a living world where ancestral spirits, mythical creatures, forgotten civilizations, and powerful guardians have existed since before recorded history. Its forests, mountains, rivers, and temples are shaped by memory and spiritual energy, while time flows unpredictably within its borders.
Many legendary creatures—including the Kapre, Duwende, and Sirena—share deep ties to Anito, and sacred relics like the Taotao draw their power from its ancient energies. Throughout the series, Anito is revealed to be far more than a spirit world—it is the mystical foundation that connects Philippine folklore, history, and higher mythology, preserving the balance between humanity and the primordial forces of creation.
Lower Mythology
[edit]The franchise features a wide range of creatures from Philippine folklore, including the Aswang, Manananggal, Kapre, Duwende, White Lady, Tikbalang, Bungisngis, Tiyanak, Berberoka, Sirena, TikTik, and numerous other legendary beings. Rather than portraying them as purely evil monsters, MUMU presents many of these creatures as complex societies with their own histories, cultures, rivalries, and moral ambiguity.
The series incorporates traditional folklore alongside original interpretations, expanding the mythology into a cohesive fantasy universe while remaining rooted in Filipino cultural traditions.
Higher Mythology
[edit]While most of MUMU follows children encountering legendary creatures hiding throughout the Philippines, the mythology extends far beyond ghosts and cryptids. Beneath the modern world lies an ancient cosmology populated by primordial beings, forgotten deities, celestial dragons, and spirits that existed long before humanity.
The creatures commonly known as mumu represent only a small part of a vast supernatural ecosystem whose origins stretch back to the creation of the world itself.
Taotao
[edit]Taotao are ancient enchanted wooden effigies that serve as one of the oldest forms of magic in the world of MUMU. Carved by forgotten civilizations and empowered through sacred rituals, each Taotao acts as both a spiritual vessel and a magical artifact, capable of storing memories, protecting sacred places, channeling supernatural energy, or imprisoning powerful beings.
No two Taotao are alike. Their appearance reflects the wood, symbols, and purpose for which they were created, often bearing intricate carvings inspired by pre-colonial Filipino iconography, Baybayin, and indigenous tribal motifs. Some are no larger than a person's hand, while others are monumental statues hidden deep within ancient forests, caves, and temples.
Throughout history, Taotao have served many roles: guardians of sacred sites, keys that unlock hidden realms, conduits for ancestral spirits, and vessels capable of sealing dangerous supernatural creatures. While many have been lost to time, others remain hidden across the Philippine archipelago, waiting for those worthy—or foolish enough—to awaken their power.
In Prisoners of Taotao, the true nature of these relics is revealed. Rather than being simple carvings, the Taotao form an interconnected magical network created to preserve the balance between the mortal world and Anito. Whoever controls them can influence ancient barriers, release long-forgotten entities, or wield powers left behind by civilizations that predate recorded history.
To most people, a Taotao appears to be nothing more than a weathered wooden figure. To those who understand the old magic, it is a living vessel—one that remembers, protects, and, when disturbed, awakens.
Pag-anito
[edit]Pag-anito is an ancient Filipino spiritual ritual performed to communicate with the realm of Anito. Long before written history, shamans and village elders used sacred chants, offerings, symbols, and ceremonial objects to seek guidance from ancestral spirits, honor nature guardians, heal the sick, or ask permission before entering sacred places. In the world of MUMU, Paganito is one of the oldest forms of magic, allowing humans to temporarily bridge the gap between the mortal world and Anito.
Different rituals serve different purposes—opening hidden gateways, calming hostile spirits, awakening enchanted Taotao, strengthening protective wards, or restoring the balance between humans and supernatural beings. A successful Pag-anito requires respect, intention, and harmony with nature; those who perform it carelessly risk attracting powerful entities or disrupting the ancient forces that preserve the balance between worlds.
Rather than functioning as a spell, Pag-anito is a sacred act of communion, emphasizing that true power comes not from controlling the spirit world, but from earning its trust and cooperation.
