K-9INE! is a 11-minute-long 35mm short film, and the first film written and directed by Elliott Power[1] The film made it's UK premiere at Manchester Film Festival[2] followed by its International premiere at Dallas International Film Festival[3]
Plot
[edit]It follows Roy, a recently retired police dog handler, whose quiet, isolated routine is interrupted when Tea Leaf, a local thief posing as a door-to-door salesman, knocks at his door selling stolen goods. Instead of turning him away, Roy invites him inside.
What begins as an awkward everyday encounter slowly becomes a psychological power struggle. Roy knows more about Tea Leaf than he initially lets on, while the presence of Roy’s Alsatian adds an underlying threat. The tension comes from watching the two men assess each other: one accustomed to authority, the other accustomed to surviving it.[4]
Production
[edit]The production was self-funded by Power and shot it over two days, largely using one house and one street on the edge of London and Kent. That limitation became part of the film’s language: rather than trying to make the world feel bigger, the production leaned into the claustrophobia and tension of a very small physical space.
The film was shot on Kodak 35mm with cinematographer Patrick Golan, using a Panavision Panaflex and a 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The boxier frame helped make the interiors feel more enclosed and slightly oppressive, while 35mm gave the everyday suburban setting a texture and weight that pushed it away from straightforward social realism.[5]
