Jeff Dillon is a contemporary Canadian painter based in Waterloo, Ontario.[1] He works with heavy-body acrylics on canvas. His paintings use flowing linework, strong colour, and layered forms.[2]
Life and career
[edit]Dillon developed an interest in nature at an early age and began drawing as a child.[3] He began painting seriously in adulthood, working on paintings at night and on weekends while employed in another field.[3][4] Unable to gain gallery representation at first, Dillon displayed paintings in local venues including a hair salon, a courthouse law library, and a bank lobby.[4]
In 2015, Barbara Aggerholm profiled Dillon in Grand Magazine, writing about his background and early development as a painter.[3] In 2018, his work appeared on the cover of The New Quarterly, Issue 148.[5]
In 2022, Dillon created the painting Solidarity after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and auctioned the work to support UNHCR's emergency response. The campaign raised nearly $20,000.[6]
In 2024, Dillon's painting #271 Celestial Chill appeared on the cover of Grain, Volume 51.3, and he was interviewed as the issue's featured artist.[7][4]
Artistic work
[edit]Dillon's paintings focus primarily on landscapes and wildlife. They use strong colour, flowing linework, layered forms, and movement. Some subjects appear abstract up close, yet remain recognizable from farther away.[2]
His work combines recognizable imagery with abstract elements and draws on Canadian landscape painting and Post-Impressionism.[2] Dillon has identified Vincent van Gogh, the Group of Seven, and Lawren Harris as influences, particularly in their use of colour, form, and the landscape as subject matter.[4]
Exhibitions and institutional installations
[edit]Dillon's work has been exhibited internationally through Canadian embassies with Global Affairs Canada.[2] In 2026, he was selected for Time Capsule, an international juried online exhibition presented by Create! Magazine and PxP Contemporary.[8]
Recognition
[edit]Dillon is an Elected Member of the Society of Canadian Artists.[2]
In 2024, Dillon was an Abstract & Experimental category finalist in AcrylicWorks 11: The Best of Acrylic, organized by Artists Network.[9]
In 2026, Dillon's painting #290 – Interwoven by Roots received an Honourable Mention in the Society of Canadian Artists' Open International Online Juried Exhibition.[10]
