The I-REK (Indigenous Range Extension Kit) is a modular precision-guidance and stand-off kit developed by Global Industrial Defence Solutions (GIDS) for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). Similar to the American Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and the extended-range JDAM-ER, the kit converts conventional unguided "dumb" bombs into long-range, precision-guided glide munitions.
Design and Features
[edit]The kit consists of a nose-mounted guidance computer unit, an integrated tail assembly with steerable fins, and mid-body fold-out wings designed to extend flight range. It is engineered to upgrade legacy Mark 80 series general-purpose bombs, turning standard payloads like the Mk-82 or Mk-83 into stand-off weapons.
- Guidance System: Utilizes a coupled Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) network, rendering the bomb capable of all-weather, day-or-night operations with high accuracy.
- Stand-off Capability: The aerodynamic wing kit allows aircraft to deploy the munitions from a safe, standoff distance. This enables the launch aircraft to strike targets without crossing into hostile air defense ranges.
Operational History
[edit]The weapon system is primarily integrated onto the CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter force. Variants of the Range Extension Kit series (including the localized Takbir and Azb REK configurations) were utilized by the Pakistan Air Force during counter-terrorism deployments and structural operations.
