Horațiu Mircea Feșnic (born 17 October 1989) is a Romanian association football referee and FIFA-listed international referee, classified in UEFA's First Category.[1][2]
Refereeing career
[edit]Feșnic played youth football for Universitatea Cluj before moving to CFR Cluj, where he also reached the club's reserve side. He subsequently left playing football and pursued refereeing.[3]
He made his top-flight refereeing debut on 12 March 2012, taking charge of Astra Giurgiu's 3–1 win over CS Mioveni. At 22 years of age, he became the youngest referee at the time to make his debut in Romania's top division. Before the appointment, he had officiated 12 senior matches, all in the third division, without previously refereeing in the second tier.[3][1]
In May 2021, Feșnic was appointed referee for the 2021 Cupa României final between Universitatea Craiova and Astra Giurgiu. Craiova won the match 3–2 after extra time.[4]
International career
[edit]Feșnic was added to the FIFA international referees list during his twenties and subsequently began receiving appointments in UEFA competitions.[1]
In 2021, he was selected as part of the refereeing group for the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Hungary and Slovenia.[1] In December of that year, he was promoted to UEFA's First Category of international referees.[2] He remained a Category 1 referee during the 2025–26 season, when he was among the Romanian officials attending UEFA's Summer Course for Top Referees.[5]
In June 2022, Feșnic refereed the UEFA Nations League match between the Netherlands and the Wales at De Kuip in Rotterdam.[6]
Feșnic was selected for a second consecutive UEFA European Under-21 Championship at the 2023 tournament, hosted by Romania and Georgia. He refereed group-stage matches including Czech Republic–England and Portugal–Netherlands.[7][8]
During the 2023–24 season, Feșnic received appointments in the UEFA Europa League group stage, continuing his progression through UEFA club competitions.
On 22 October 2024, he made his debut as the main referee in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, taking charge of the match between Girona and Slovan Bratislava. Spanish newspaper Diario AS described the appointment as his first match as the main referee in the Champions League.[9][10]
During the 2024–25 European season, Feșnic received appointments across UEFA club competitions. He refereed Europa League matches including Lazio–Nice and AZ Alkmaar–Galatasaray, while also officiating in the Champions League and Nations League.[11]
In March 2025, he was appointed to referee the first leg of the UEFA Conference League round of 16 between Molde and Legia Warsaw. It was his fifth European match of the 2024–25 season.[12]
Feșnic continued to receive appointments in the 2025–26 UEFA Europa League. In November 2025 he refereed VfB Stuttgart–Feyenoord Rotterdam.[13] In January 2026, he took charge of Genk–Malmö in the final league-phase round.[14]
