Hidayat Arifin is an Indonesian registered nurse, academic and researcher. He is a lecturer in the Department of Medical-Surgical, Emergency, Disaster and Critical Care Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in Surabaya, Indonesia.[1][2] His research applies systematic review, meta-analysis and secondary analysis of national survey data to questions of chronic illness and malnutrition, and he has published on health service access in Indonesia.[1][3]
He has been a member of the Council of Asian Science Editors, based in South Korea, since 2023, and of Sigma Theta Tau International since 2025.
Education
[edit]Dr. Arifin trained initially as a nurse at the Health Polytechnic of Palembang (Politeknik Kesehatan Kemenkes Palembang) in Palembang, South Sumatra, completing a diploma in nursing in 2015.[4]
He continued his studies at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, where he received a Bachelor of Nursing in 2017, completed the professional nursing programme in 2018, and obtained a Master of Nursing in 2020.[4]
In 2022 Dr. Arifin enrolled in the doctoral programme at the College of Nursing, Taipei Medical University in Taipei, Taiwan, completing his PhD in 2026 under the supervision of Kuei-Ru Chou.[4][2]
Early career
[edit]Dr. Arifin worked in the Medical-Surgical Nursing Laboratory of the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga from 2019 to 2021. He was a faculty member at the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, from 2021 to 2023, before returning to Universitas Airlangga as a faculty member in 2023.[5][1]
Editorial work
[edit]Dr. Arifin has held editorial positions at a number of nursing journals. Since 2021 he has been an editor of Jurnal Keperawatan Padjadjaran.[5] He is also editor-in-chief of the Palembang Nursing Journal, associate editor of the Journal of Holistic Nursing, and an editor of the Pediomaternal Nursing Journal, having previously been an assistant editor of that journal and of Jurnal Ners.[3] From 2021 to 2022 he was an academic editor of PeerJ,[6] and he has undertaken peer review for the International Journal of Nursing Studies and other journals.[3]
Research
[edit]Dr. Arifin's research centres on medical-surgical and adult nursing, chronic illness, cancer care and the nutritional needs of patients with long-term conditions. Methodologically, his work draws on secondary analysis of large-scale survey datasets and on evidence synthesis, including systematic review, meta-analysis and network meta-analysis.[1][3]
A recurring strand of his research concerns the burden of malnutrition in clinically vulnerable populations. He led a meta-analysis of 35 studies covering 9,278 colorectal cancer survivors, which estimated the global prevalence of overall malnutrition in that group at 47.8%, with higher rates in Asia and in lower-middle-income countries.[7] He also led a bivariate meta-analysis of 26 studies comparing the diagnostic accuracy of three widely used malnutrition screening instruments in patients with chronic disease.[8] He subsequently contributed to comparable syntheses of malnutrition prevalence among people living with HIV/AIDS,[2] among older adults with sarcopenia,[9] and among migrant workers, where he and colleagues reported a double burden of undernutrition and obesity across 30 studies and more than 135,000 workers.[10]
Working with collaborators at Taipei Medical University, Dr. Arifin has co-authored a series of network meta-analyses comparing non-pharmacological interventions for older adults and people with dementia, covering reminiscence-based therapies,[11] emotion-oriented therapies,[12] recreational therapies[13] and animal-assisted therapy.[14] He has also co-authored meta-analyses on the prevalence of falls among older adults with dementia in institutional care[15] and on sarcopenia in adults with cognitive impairment.[16]
A second strand of his research uses Indonesian national survey data, including the Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas) and the Demographic and Health Survey, to examine equity of access to health services. Work in this area has addressed determinants of measles vaccination coverage among Indonesian infants.[17]
According to Indonesia's national SINTA research index, as of 2026 Dr. Arifin had 126 Scopus-indexed articles and about 9,500 Scopus citations, giving him a Scopus h-index of 18; his Google Scholar record listed 192 articles and an h-index of 26.[1][3]
