Hermann Schnabel (1921-2010) was a German industrialist. He was an owner of Helm AG. Schnabel was also a noted art and stamp collector.
Biography
[edit]Schnabel was born on March 29, 1921 near Nachod in what was then Silesia. He was the son of Hermann Schnabel and Emmy (née Zwiekirsch ).[1] In interviews, he claimed that he grew up in Riesengebirge (Giant Mountains) and was raised by his grandparents. He only learned the German language when he was 12 years old.
Schnabel bought Helm AG from Karl Otto Helm in 1950 and ran the company until 1984, when leadership was passed down to his son, Dieter Schnabel.[2] In 2010, Schnabel owned 60 percent of Helm AG, which by this is already one of the world's leading independent chemicals marketing enterprises with interests in trading, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.[3] At the time of his death he had an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion.[2]
In 1983, he was appointed Consul General of Pakistan, a post he held until 2003. He was a supporter of Germany's Christian Democratic Union and have made large donations to the party.
Schnabel was married twice. He co-founded his foundation, Hermann and Else Schnabel Foundation, with his second wife Else Frieda Schnabel.[3] He reportedly disliked wristwatches but was a stamp enthusiast. He also had an extensive collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Rembrandt and Edgar Degas.[3]
