Habib Abdulredha Al Mail (Arabic: حبيب عبد الرضا الميل; 3 July 1942 – 25 April 2003) was a Kuwaiti major general (staff) and naval officer who served as the founder and first commander of the Kuwait Naval Force from 1974 to 1986.[1] In his youth, he played as a footballer for Al-Uruba—which was later renamed Al-Arabi SC—and was among the early players to represent the Kuwait national football team in international matches outside Kuwait during the early era of Kuwaiti football.[1]

[edit source]Habib Abdulredha Al Mail was born on 3 July 1942 in the Sharq district of Kuwait City.[1] He received his early education at Al-Sharqiya School and Shuwaikh Secondary School before enrolling in 1959 at the Naval College in Alexandria, Egypt, graduating in 1961.[1][2]
Football career
[edit source]In 1957, Al Mail began playing association football for Al-Uruba club, which was later renamed Al-Arabi SC.[1] He also represented the Kuwait national team as one of the early players to participate in international matches held outside the country.[1]
Military career
[edit source]After graduating from the Naval College in 1961, Al Mail commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Coast Guard directorate of the Kuwaiti Ministry of the Interior, serving as a naval officer in charge of boat squadrons.[1] He served in the Coast Guard until 1973, rising to the rank of Major.[1]
Formation of the Kuwait Naval Force
[edit source]On 11 June 1973, as part of Kuwait's national initiative to establish a dedicated military naval unit, Al Mail was transferred from the Coast Guard to the Kuwaiti Army due to his maritime expertise.[1] On 22 November 1973, he was assigned as Head of the Naval Staff within the Military Operations Directorate under the General Staff Headquarters. An Amiri decree issued on 24 November 1973 formalized his appointment as a Major in the Kuwaiti Army.[1][3][2]
Al Mail led the organization and development project for the newly formed naval branch. He drafted its operational and administrative frameworks and translated the requirements of the Supreme Defence Council into a practical plan to build a naval force capable of protecting Kuwait's coastline and territorial waters.[1][4]
He was appointed the first Commander of the Kuwait Naval Force, serving from 1974 until 1986, where he established its organizational structure and trained its personnel.[1] He continued his military service until retiring in 1991 with the rank of Major General (Staff).[1]
