GINA Software s.r.o. is a Czech software company based in Brno.[1] It develops mapping and coordination software used by emergency services and humanitarian organizations.[3][4] According to the export promotion portal of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its software is used in more than 50 countries.[5]

History

[edit]

The company has its origin in a student project at the Brno University of Technology.[2][5] In 2010, students Zbyněk Poulíček, Boris Procházka and Petra Černá were developing mapping software for tourists and decided to adapt it for rescue workers after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.[2] The application, named GINA as an acronym of Geographical Information Assistant, ran on the Microsoft Azure platform and worked as a shared digital map on which users could record information in real time.[2][6]

The software was used during humanitarian operations after the Haiti earthquake.[6][7] The European Union used it in its ECHO programme to monitor the spread of cholera in Haiti.[6] The team entered the project in the 2010 Microsoft Imagine Cup and competed at the worldwide finals in Warsaw, where it did not place in the final round.[6] According to IEEE Spectrum, the competition led the students to establish a company around the technology.[6] Bill Gates mentioned the project on his blog as the Czech national Imagine Cup entry whose software was used to coordinate rescue and recovery workers in Haiti.[8] GINA Software s.r.o. was entered in the Czech commercial register on 25th November 2010.[1]

The software was later used during the response to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan and after the 2020 explosion in Beirut.[5][7] It was also used by Czech firefighters during the floods in June 2013.[9] According to a profile published by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the company had about 30 employees.[5]

Products

[edit]

The company develops Smart CAD, an incident management system for dispatch centres, and Tactical AVL, a system for tracking vehicles and personnel in the field.[10] Field units use mobile and tablet applications connected to the system.[11][12]

Deployment

[edit]

In the Czech Republic, the software is used by units of the integrated rescue system, including fire brigades, the police and the emergency medical service.[3][12] Fire crews use tablets with the software in place of paper maps when responding to incidents.[11] In 2013, the South Moravian Region stated that the deployment of the technology had reduced fire brigade response times in the region by one third.[13] The software is also used by emergency services in Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland, including the Slovak mountain rescue service.[5] The company is an official supplier of the United Nations.[4][5] According to BusinessInfo.cz, it cooperates with the European Space Agency.[14]

In 2026, Airbus Public Safety and Security signed a memorandum of understanding with GINA Software regarding integration of emergency response systems.[15][16] The agreement covers deployments for government and security agencies in the Middle East.[15]

Awards

[edit]

In 2018, the company received a special recognition in the Social Impact Award category of the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Central Europe programme.[17][18] In 2019, it won the main prize of the Czech SDGs Awards, organized by the Association of Social Responsibility.[4][19][20] The award was presented on 30 May 2019 at the Czernin Palace in Prague.[19]
