Comment: In preparing this draft, I disclose that AI assistance was used as follows: I used Claude (Anthropic) to find and read sources, and to help draft the text. Every sentence was checked against the cited source, and the founders confirmed the facts. I am an Eden AI employee; my paid-editing disclosure is on my user page. Eden AI is a French technology company based in Villeurbanne, in the Lyon metropolitan area, that provides an API giving access to artificial intelligence models from several providers through a single interface.[2][3] It was founded in 2020 by Taha Zemmouri and Samy Melaine; the two had previously founded DataGenius, a machine learning consultancy, in 2017.[1][4][3]
The platform covers natural language processing, computer vision, speech and generative artificial intelligence models from providers such as Google, Amazon Web Services and OpenAI.[5][6] The company raised €1.5 million in 2022 and €3 million in 2024.[2][5]
History
[edit]In April 2017, Taha Zemmouri and Samy Melaine founded DataGenius, a machine learning start-up in Lyon.[4][3] Taha Zemmouri told TechCrunch that the company began as a consulting firm specialized in data science and artificial intelligence, and that as consultants they had to test models from several vendors before recommending one to a client.[2]
Taha Zemmouri and Samy Melaine started Eden AI in January 2020, and its platform was officially launched in September 2021.[1] The company was supported by the Paris-based accelerator 50 Partners.[2] At the time, it offered a single API to services such as text extraction from images, object recognition, speech-to-text and machine translation, with about twenty partner providers, including Deepgram, AssemblyAI and Speechmatics, and compatibility with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.[2] Users had to name the provider in each request; the company said it planned to add automatic provider selection.[2]
In April 2022, Eden AI raised a €1.5 million (US$1.6 million) pre-seed round from business angels including Olivier Pomel of Datadog and Nicolas Dessaigne of Algolia.[2][1] According to CFNews, this first round formalized the company's shift from an agency model to software publishing.[7] In November 2024, it raised €3 million, consisting of €2 million in equity and €1 million in debt, in a seed round led by Galion.exe.[5][6][8] By then, its platform gave access to more than 70 AI technologies and 100 models from providers such as Google, AWS and OpenAI.[6] About 90 percent of its customers were outside France, with the United States as its first market, and France accounted for 9 percent of its revenue.[9][8] Taha Zemmouri said the company was working on model routing, which was then still at the research and development stage.[8] In 2025, the company had 12 employees.[3]
Products
[edit]Eden AI's main product is an API that gives access, through a single interface, to AI models from several providers, covering natural language processing, computer vision and generative artificial intelligence.[5] Services available through the platform include transcription, translation, image and video analysis, and information extraction from documents.[9] According to Taha Zemmouri, switching from one provider to another only requires changing a parameter in the API call.[2] In 2022, the company was developing a feature called Genius, which recommends providers automatically based on each user's data, and offered a tool called Pipelines for chaining several AI services.[10]
Customers are billed through their Eden AI account rather than opening an account with each provider. They can also use their own key for a given provider. In 2022, the company said it charged the same prices as the providers and was paid a commission by them.[2] In 2024, its business model combined a self-service offer with a monthly subscription for small businesses and freelancers, a premium offer with advanced monitoring and multi-organization management for software publishers and large companies, and a commission on the use of AI services.[8] Its customers were mainly small software publishers and start-ups integrating AI into their products, and small and medium-sized companies automating internal processes.[8]
The platform also includes tools to build AI workflows that chain several services, for example transcribing audio, translating the text and analysing its sentiment, and to monitor the cost, usage and performance of the integrated services from a single dashboard.[6][11][8] According to Taha Zemmouri, users can choose a model by price, performance on their own data, latency or compliance with local legislation.[8] A 2026 comparison of alternatives to OpenRouter by Technology.org noted that its catalogue combined large language models with other capabilities such as vision, speech recognition and optical character recognition, and that it offered no self-hosting option.[12]
Reception
[edit]In 2026, Eden AI was presented as a European alternative to OpenRouter, notably in a comparison published by the AI gateway company Opper, which described it as a French company offering an EU endpoint.[13] In 2025, the market research firm Grand View Research listed Eden AI among the emerging companies in the AI API market.[14] A 2025 study of image embedding implementations published in the Journal of Information Systems Engineering and Management evaluated Eden AI's API aggregation alongside Hugging Face and Replicate.[15]
