Draft:Dunesday
Dunesday refers to the concurrent theatrical release of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December 2026. Both films are tentpole sequels from major franchises (the science-fiction Dune series and the Marvel Cinematic Universe), released by Warner Bros. and Walt Disney Studios respectively. The scheduling sets up a direct box-office showdown on the same weekend.[1] The portmanteau name “Dunesday” was coined by Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet at a publicity event in January 2026, and quickly spread online.[2]
Background
[edit]Dune: Part Three is the third instalment of director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction saga.[3] Produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros., it follows Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two in continuing Paul Atreides’ story. Villeneuve leads a returning cast (Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, etc.) and confirmed a release on 18 December 2026.[4] Avengers: Doomsday is the sixth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and produced by Marvel Studios. It follows Avengers: Endgame and is billed as part of Phase Six of the MCU. Marvel announced the title Avengers: Doomsday and key cast at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. Originally scheduled for May 2026, Disney later pushed Doomsday to the competitive holiday season, eventually confirming the 18 December 2026 release date.[3]
Neither studio has issued a joint statement addressing the overlap, and by mid-2026 the standoff had become a recurring trade-press storyline, with outlets describing it as a scheduling "game of chicken" that neither side would blink on.[5][6] A key wrinkle emerged when Warner Bros. secured an exclusive multi-week IMAX booking for Dune: Part Three covering the shared opening weekend, leaving Avengers: Doomsday largely without North American IMAX screens during that window — though Disney insiders have argued the film can still reach roughly $1 billion without it.[7]
