Background

Dune: Part Three is the third instalment of director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction saga. Villeneuve leads a returning cast (Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, etc.) and confirmed a release on 18 December 2026. Avengers: Doomsday is the sixth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and produced by Marvel Studios. It follows Avengers: Endgame and is billed as part of Phase Six of the MCU. Marvel announced the title Avengers: Doomsday and key cast at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. Originally scheduled for May 2026, Disney later pushed Doomsday to the competitive holiday season, eventually confirming the 18 December 2026 release date.

Neither studio has issued a joint statement addressing the overlap, and by mid-2026 the standoff had become a recurring trade-press storyline, with outlets describing it as a scheduling "game of chicken" that neither side would blink on. A key wrinkle emerged when Warner Bros. secured an exclusive multi-week IMAX booking for Dune: Part Three covering the shared opening weekend, leaving Avengers: Doomsday largely without North American IMAX screens during that window — though Disney insiders have argued the film can still reach roughly $1 billion without it.
