Daniel Dombrowe (2013)

Daniel Dombrowe (born February 20, 1973) is a German social entrepreneur, DJ (stage name Dan D.), artist activist and event organizer. In 2007 he founded the Baltic Soul Weekender, an annual multi-day soul music festival.[1][2][3]

Early life and career

[edit]

Dombrowe was born February 20, 1973 in Bielefeld, Germany. As a teenager he started his DJ career. In the 1990s, he specialized in African-American music, and as a soul DJ he performed in Germany and other European countries.[1][4] In 1997 he moved to London, where he worked as a resident DJ and marketing manager at the Soul Café.[1] He performed in soul and jazz clubs (e. g. Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club[5], 100 Club[6], Jazz Cafe). His career included performances in Cologne, Berlin, Madrid and London, as well as eight years as a resident DJ in clubs in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.[4] In 2001 he moved back to Germany. In Hamburg he was active as a DJ and promoter of soul music. Die Zeit described him as internationally known for his expertise as a soul DJ.[3][7]

Radio

[edit]

From 2004 to 2019, Dombrowe co-presented the radio show The More Soul Show together with Kenny B. on the Hamburg broadcaster Tide.[3]

Baltic Soul Weekender

[edit]

In 2007, Dombrowe founded the Baltic Soul Weekender. The festival combines live performances and DJ sets with accommodation direct at the festival site.[8]

Work with soul artists

[edit]

Dombrowe provided year-round financial, legal, and social support to both well-known and lesser-known soul artists who lost the rights to their music in the 1960s and 1970s through exploitative contracts or fraud. His efforts helped to bring them from the soul scene back into the public eye, and to locate veteran soul artists who had largely disappeared from the music business and to assist them with problems involving their music and royalties. Dombrowe helped Amrikcan singer Ann Sexton to arrange legal assistance after she had not received royalties from her recordings for many years. He also made it possible to bring singer Gloria Scott to Germany after she had spent years completely outside the music industry.[1][3][2]
