Craft is a note-taking and productivity software application developed by Craft Docs Ltd., a software company based in Budapest, Hungary. It was released for macOS and iOS in November 2020, and later made available for iPadOS, Windows, the web, and Android. The application uses a block-based document editor and supports offline use with cross-device synchronisation.[1][2] It received Apple's Mac App of the Year award in 2021.[3]
History
[edit]Craft Docs was founded in 2019 by Bálint Orosz, who had previously been head of mobile product at Skyscanner; his earlier company, Distinction, was acquired by Skyscanner in 2014.[4] The application was released publicly on November 12, 2020. In a review for MacStories, Ryan Alessi wrote that its focus on native-platform integration and offline use distinguished it from web-based tools such as Notion.[1]
In April 2021, the company raised $8 million in a Series A round led by Creandum, with participation from InReach Ventures and Skyscanner co-founder Gareth Williams.[4] In December 2021, Apple named Craft its Mac App of the Year at the annual App Store Awards.[3] The same year, the Financial Times-backed publication Sifted included Craft in a list of central European startups to watch.[5]
In 2022, the company released web and Windows versions and raised a $12.2 million Series B round led by EBRD Venture Capital, bringing total external funding to about $20 million; the company said the application had passed one million installations.[6] Forbes Hungary also reported on the round.[7]
Version 3, released in November 2024, added document-styling options, collections, and task management linked to a calendar view.[2] An update in September 2025 introduced Apple's Liquid Glass interface styling and on-device artificial intelligence using Apple Foundation Models.[8]
Features
[edit]Craft uses a block-based editor in which documents are assembled from individual blocks of text, images, code, and other content; pages can be nested, organised into folders, and linked to one another.[1][9] Documents can be exported to Markdown, PDF, and Microsoft Word formats, and multiple users can edit a document simultaneously.[1] Version 3 added in-document task management, including checklists, due dates, and reminders connected to a calendar view.[2] The application includes an AI assistant for tasks such as drafting, proofreading, translation, and summarisation, which can run through cloud processing or on-device models.[9][8]
Craft is available as a native application on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Windows, with an Android version and a web-based version; all versions support offline editing, with changes syncing across devices when a connection is available.[1][10]
Reception
[edit]Craft has been reviewed by technology publications, several of which compared it to Notion and noted its native-platform design and offline support. Writing for The Verge in 2024, David Pierce reviewed version 3, focusing on its combination of notes, tasks, and a calendar.[2] MacStories reviewed the application's note-taking and collaboration features.[1] A comparison in XDA Developers of Craft and Microsoft OneNote described Craft as having a more native interface but a higher price.[11] TechRadar covered the application as an option for consolidating notes and documents in a single tool.[10]
The application has received design awards, including a German Design Award for interactive user experience[12] and a German Brand Award.[13] It won Webby Awards in 2024[14] and 2025,[15] and was a finalist for the Apple Design Awards in 2021.[16]
