  • Comment: Notability not clearly established per WP:GNG - we need significant coverage about Sandor (in-depth; more than passing single mentions) in published reliable independent secondary sources (not his website or works by him). Tone is promotional not neutral; some assertions need citations. Paul W (talk) 21:37, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: @MCE89 Author here! Thank you for your feedback. I have revised the article according to your suggestions. Copyvio now only detects as duplicated text the name of conference venues; but, this is impossible to avoid.
  • Comment: @Ldm1954 Author here! Thank you for your clear feedback. I have adressed it as follows: (i) "many things like directing research is WP:MILL" => removed Section "Education and Career". (ii) "The awards are all minor" => Added new Section "Impact on Augmented Reality Research" to clarify community impact. (iii) Additionally, I have improved the quality of references. Looking forward to your feedback! 15:37, 27 Feb 2026 (UTC)
  • Comment: The awards are all minor, and many things like directing research is WP:MILL. It is too soon, I suggest waiting a few years. Ldm1954 (talk) 12:11, 20 December 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: @NeoGaze Thanks for flagging the copied text! Just for future reference, even if the person who added text to Wikipedia is also the original author, we still can't accept anything that has previously been published elsewhere unless it's been released under a compatible license. Since this text was first published on Sandor's website, he still holds the copyright and would need to go through the steps at WP:DONATETEXT to license it in order for us to be able to use it. • Comment: For the reviewer, a part of this draft features copypasted text from this subject's own website, but since he's also the creator of the draft it doesn't appear to be violating copyright. NeoGaze (talk) 19:16, 22 November 2025 (UTC)

Christian Sandor (born 8 August 1975) is a German computer scientist and a FIDE International Master who currently works as a professor at Université Paris-Saclay.[1] He leads Team ARAI (Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence) within the Laboratoire interdisciplinaire des sciences du numérique (LISN), a joint lab between the university and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).[2] Since the year 2000, his research area has been augmented reality (AR).[2]

Career

[edit]

Sandor received his Diplom (2001) and doctorate (2005) from the Technical University of Munich;[3] his advisors were Gudrun Klinker and Steven Feiner (co-advisor).[4][3] After working as a principal researcher at Canon's Leading-Edge Technology Research Headquarters (Tokyo, Japan), he joined the University of South Australia in 2008 where he directed the Magic Vision Lab from 2010 until 2014.[3][5]

From 2014 to 2018 he worked as an associate professor at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, co-directing the Interactive Media Design Lab.[6] From 2019 to 2021 he worked as an associate professor at the City University of Hong Kong's School of Creative Media.[7] In October 2021, he accepted a professor position at Université Paris-Saclay.[2] On the French national level, he leads subproject 1 of the French national research programme eNSEMBLE on digital collaboration.[8]

Research

[edit]

Sandor's research group at the University of South Australia developed an augmented reality "x-ray" visualization for mobile phones, which was then further developed in a collaboration with Nokia. This system enabled users to view behind occluding buildings. It was covered in the news: in the Australian newspaper The Age,[9] the technology news venue iTnews,[5] Wired, and the Japanese broadcaster NHK with regard to further demonstrations of the group.[10][11]

In 2015, he published as first author, together with colleagues including Steven Feiner and Richard Newcombe, the concept of "True Augmented Reality", exploring the challenges of making a system pass an AR Turing Test; a 2021 review in Frontiers in Virtual Reality credits this work with introducing the concept.[12][13] From 2020 to 2024, he was an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics; in 2021, he received its "Associate Editor of the Year" award.[14] More recently in 2026, a paper from his team on AR for teamwork in open liver surgery, received an honourable mention at the ACM CHI conference.[15]

In 2013, he participated in the Dagstuhl seminar "Virtual Realities"[16] and organized two seminars at the related Japanese NII Shonan Meeting program, including "Perception in Augmented Reality" (2016) and "Augmented Reality in Human-Computer Interaction" (2018, with Yuta Itoh and Kai Kunze).[17]

Chess

[edit]

Sandor is an International Master of chess, having received this FIDE title in 1996,[1][18] shortly after having achieved his peak Elo rating: 2420 (January 1995).[19] In 1994, he became the Bavarian blitz champion in the adult category.[20] He also beat grandmaster Robert Hübner in a serious game, which was published as an annotated example game in Edmar Mednis and Rudolf Teschner's book Wie schlage ich überlegene Gegner?.[21]
