Chinor tagidagi duel (Uzbek: Chinor tagidagi duel; Russian: Дуэль под чинарой)[1] is a 1979 Uzbek Soviet film directed by Melis Abzalov and written by Rixsivoy Muhammadjonov.[2] The film's events largely take place in the Forish District of Jizzakh Region.[3]
History
[edit]After returning from Moscow in 1971, where he had studied under the renowned Soviet filmmaker Georgiy Daneliya, Melis Abzalov began production on Chinor tagidagi duel several years later. The film became his first independently directed feature. Behzod Hamroyev, who was well known at the time, and Shuhrat Umarov, the son of Xamza Umarov, took part in an announced casting call for the role of Nortoy. On the recommendation of Daneliya, Rashid Malikov was ultimately selected to portray Nortoy.
Plot
[edit]After failing to gain admission to a university, a young man named Nortoy returns from Tashkent to his native village, where he follows in his father's footsteps by becoming a shepherd. Hoping to persuade his widowed father to remarry, Nortoy tricks the village nurse into visiting their home by falsely claiming that his father has fallen ill. He also takes the initiative to propose marriage to his beloved Ugiloy on behalf of his family. However, his well-intentioned actions lead to a series of misunderstandings and unfortunate incidents.
Following insults directed at his father, Nortoy challenges the chairman of the village collective farm to a duel. As time passes, he becomes increasingly devoted to shepherding and gradually abandons his plans to pursue higher education. His father, an elderly shepherd and a veteran of the Second World War, eventually convinces him of the importance of obtaining an education. The following year, Nortoy and Ugiloy travel to Tashkent to enroll at a university.
At both the beginning and the end of the film, Nortoy is shown at the fountain beside the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theatre, first alone and later together with Ogʻiloy. The line, "I know them—they're from Paris," spoken during these scenes, became one of the film's most memorable quotations.[3][4]
