CheckUp & Choices is an American digital health company that develops online programs aimed at addressing substance use, including alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and stimulants.[1]
History and overview
[edit]Founded by clinical psychologist Reid K. Hester, the company developed its software from earlier digital interventions such as Drinker's Check-Up, ModerateDrinking.com, and OvercomingAddictions.net.[2] The company's online applications provide self-guided screening tests, symptom trackers, and exercises based on cognitive behavioral therapy techniques.[1]
Development of the foundational software was initially supported by grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).[3]
Research and reception
[edit]The platform's underlying interventions have been the subject of research published in peer-reviewed journals, evaluating computer-based brief interventions for problem drinkers.[3]
CheckUp & Choices has been reviewed by publications examining the effectiveness of digital recovery tools. Social Work Today noted the program's use of personalized feedback and motivational interviewing techniques in a review of digital recovery resources.[1] In 2016, NPR included the software in a review of mobile applications designed to help individuals evaluate and change their drinking behaviors.[2]
