ABHIROOP K
[edit]Naval architect and Offshore engineer
Abhiroop K is an naval architect and offshore engineer whose expertise centers on marine decarbonization, statutory plan approval, and ship stability and structural engineering. Over the course of his career, he has held specialist roles at two of the world's leading international classification societies — RINA, where he currently serves as an Environmental Plan Approval Engineer, and Lloyd's Register, where he served as a Specialist within the Global Environmental Team. Across these roles, he has developed deep technical expertise across the full spectrum of MARPOL-related statutory compliance requirements, including the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), IMO Data Collection System (DCS) reporting and Ballast Water Management Plans (BWMP). He has been designated a Subject Matter Expert for EEXI and FuelEU Maritime compliance, in which capacity he resolves complex technical queries on behalf of clients and liaises directly with Flag Administrations to secure regulatory concurrence and clarification.
His expertise in marine decarbonization is reinforced by a substantial body of applied research, including multiple peer-reviewed papers and conference presentations on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of marine biofouling, antifouling coatings, and their effects on ship frictional resistance and fuel efficiency — work recognized with best paper honors at two international conferences. Alongside this environmental specialization, he holds equally strong expertise in ship stability engineering, having authored intact and damage stability booklets, feasibility studies, and structural calculations for a wide range of vessel types, including bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, and offshore support vessels.
Early life and education
[edit]Abhiroop K graduated from the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), a deemed university in India, where he completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering from 2016 to 2020. He graduated at the top of his cohort and was awarded a gold medal for academic performance.
Career
[edit]Vedam Design & Technical Consultancy Pvt Ltd (2020–2022)
[edit]Abhiroop began his professional career in October 2020 as an Engineer (Structure and Stability) at Vedam Design & Technical Consultancy Pvt Ltd. In this role he prepared intact and damage stability booklets for a range of vessel types — including offshore support vessels (OSVs), bulk carriers, tankers, and container ships — in accordance with the Indian IS Code 2008, using Loadicator, MAXSURF, and FORAN software.
Notable engineering work from this period includes stability recalculations for bulk carriers undergoing jumboization (lengthening by a full cargo-hold section to increase deadweight), addendum stability documentation following Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofits, and feasibility studies enabling more than ten bulk carriers to be repurposed for container and special cargo transport. He also contributed to basic design packages for a 7,000 DWT bulk carrier and a 1,400 DWT oil tanker, and prepared a stability booklet and capacity plan for a pilot boat to class requirements.
Lloyd's Register (2022–2026)
[edit]Abhiroop joined Lloyd's Register in August 2022 as a Specialist within the company's Global Environmental Team, a division responsible for statutory plan approval and technical query resolution under MARPOL and related IMO instruments.[2] His portfolio has included:
- EEXI and Onboard Management Manual (OMM) plan approvals for a large number of vessels, in line with MEPC guidance, including ShaPoLi/EPL (Shaft Power Limitation / Engine Power Limitation) installation review from a survey standpoint, coordination with Flag Administrations to secure concurrence for Permanent Power Limitation, and verification of CFD-derived speed-power curves against IACS guidelines.
- Ballast Water Management Plan review and approval, including direct liaison with Flag Administrations for regulatory clarification and concurrence.
- Tonnage certification, involving 3D ship modeling and volume estimation using NAPA software, culminating in the issuance of Tonnage Certificates under the 1969 International Tonnage Convention.
- SEEMP II and III plan review, including guidance on Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) to improve CII ratings, and issuance of Certificates of Compliance.
- IMO DCS and CII verification, including annual carbon intensity calculations per MEPC guidance and issuance of Statements of Compliance.
- EU/UK MRV and FuelEU Maritime compliance assessment, including development of internal Excel-based templates to support client submissions under FuelEU Maritime requirements.
Within Lloyd's Register, Abhiroop has been designated a Subject Matter Expert for EEXI and FuelEU Maritime competencies, and manages statutory plan approval — spanning EU/UK MRV, FuelEU Maritime, and IMO DCS compliance — for a large V.Ships-managed fleet, coordinating directly with client engineers and Flag Administrations to ensure timely certificate issuance.
In July 2026, Abhiroop moved to RINA, an Italy-headquartered international classification society and engineering consultancy, taking on the role of Environmental Plan Approval Engineer based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The role continues his specialization in statutory environmental compliance for shipping, building on his prior experience in EEXI, CII, SEEMP, and Ballast Water Management Plan approval at Lloyd's Register.
Technical contributions
[edit]Abhiroop developed an Excel-based FuelEU Maritime calculation tool, subsequently adopted internally at Lloyd's Register for FuelEU verification workflows. He also contributed to the development of AI-assisted plan approval tools as part of the company's digitalization strategy, and served as a Digital Workbench Champion, a role in which he trained colleagues and supported clients in adopting digital statutory approval workflows.
He independently developed and launched NavCIIFuel, a dedicated digital platform for maritime decarbonization compliance, featuring purpose-built calculators for FuelEU Maritime and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) assessments.
Research interests
[edit]Abhiroop's academic and applied research centers on the hydrodynamic and environmental performance of ships, with a particular focus on:
- Marine biofouling and its effect on ship frictional resistance, modeled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD);
- Comparative performance of antifouling coatings under CFD simulation;
- Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baselining for Indian inland cargo vessels, including the impact of hull fouling;
- Energy-saving devices (ESDs) and their effect on fuel consumption and emissions; and
- Applications of big data analytics within the marine industry.
