Michael Joseph Taylor[1] (born April 11, 1980), better known by his stage name Compton Menace,[2] is an American West Coast rapper, actor, and record label executive from Compton, California. Best known for his raw storytelling and deep roots in Los Angeles County gang culture, he first gained mainstream recognition in 2008 as a member of The Game’s[3] record label, Black Wall Street Records.[4]

Early life

[edit]

Growing up in Compton, he became a part of local street blood gang Fruit Town Piru. The streets of Compton were filled with violence, drugs and corruption. He spent his youth fully immersed in active gang life, losing many close friends to localized street wars and gun violence. He attended local schools that were heavily territorial and considered "Crip schools". However, he found a temporary neutral ground and sense of safety through organized sports like football, which briefly bridged the gap between rival gang factions.[5]

Critical reception

[edit]

Music critics from platforms like HotNewHipHop praise his music for keeping the traditional, gritty spirit of 1990s and 2000s West Coast gangsta rap alive. His ability to secure major features from elite artists, including Wiz Khalifa,[6] Chris Brown,[7] and Lil Wayne,[8] is frequently cited by critics as proof of his strong industry respect and networking power. Some hip-hop commentators note that despite strong co-signs and heavy-hitting singles like Blood Nxxgaz, his musical catalog never fully cross over into the commercial mainstream due to a lack of major label marketing muscle early on.
