The Combat of Teplitz was an engagement of the Seven Years' War fought on 2 August 1762 at Teplitz (modern Teplice, Czech Republic). The battle was fought between Prussian forces under Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz and Austrian forces commanded by Christian Philipp von Löwenstein-Wertheim. The engagement ended in an Austrian victory.[1]
Background
[edit]In 1762, during the final year of the Seven Years' War, Prussian forces were campaigning in Saxony and Bohemia. Following the situation after Russia's withdrawal from the war, fighting continued between Prussia and Austria in the region of Saxony and Bohemia.[2]
Engagement
[edit]On 2 August 1762, Seydlitz's Prussian forces attacked Austrian troops near Teplitz. The Austrian forces under Wertheim repulsed the Prussian attack, forcing the Prussians to withdraw. Prussian losses were 558 Prussian soldiers, 14 officers, and two artillery pieces, while Austrian losses were 667 men.[1][2]
Commanders
[edit]Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz was one of Frederick the Great's leading cavalry commanders and served as the Prussian commander during the engagement.[3]
Christian Philipp von Löwenstein-Wertheim was an Austrian general who commanded the Austrian forces at Teplitz.[citation needed]
