The AZB-81LR (Azb-81 Long Range) is an indigenous, precision-guided Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) and stand-off weapon (SOW) developed by Qaswa Industries and marketed globally through Global Industrial Defence Solutions (GIDS) for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).[1] Unveiled at the IDEAS defense exhibition, the weapon represents a development in the localization of long-range, low-observable precision munitions within Pakistan's defense industrial complex.[1]
Design and Capabilities
[edit]The AZB-81LR is an evolved configuration of the standard Azb Range Extension Kit (REK) series.[1] Instead of operating purely as an unpowered glide payload, the weapon features a specialized aerodynamic airframe casing equipped with deployable folding wings and an integrated miniature turbojet powerplant.[1][2] This hybrid mechanism expands its deployment capabilities significantly, allowing it to sustain low-observable cruise patterns over extended ranges.[1]
- Payload and Airframe: The internal structure encases a standard 119 kg (250 lb) Mk-81 general-purpose bomb core payload, keeping its overall launch mass highly compact (between 100 to 125 kg).[1]
- Guidance and Targeting: To bypass heavy electronic warfare and jamming environments, it employs a coupled system merging Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and an Inertial navigation system (INS) for mid-course corrections, paired with a terminal Imaging Infrared (IIR) homing seeker.[1] The combination produces a precise target footprint of under 3 meters circular error probable (CEP).[1]
- Stealth Operations: Its sub-caliber, low-observable dimensions make it compact enough to fit inside the internal weapon bays of next-generation stealth fighter jets, allowing it to be dropped without compromising the radar signature of the launch platform.[3]
Deployment and Flight Envelope
[edit]The weapon is engineered for multi-platform integration across both manned and unmanned strike assets of the Pakistan Air Force:[3]
- Manned Fighters: Deployed via multi-ejector racks on the CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder, with configurations allowing a single fighter aircraft to carry 8 to 16 munitions simultaneously.[3]
- Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs): Fully integrated into high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) platforms, including the Baykar Bayraktar Akıncı and indigenous GIDS Shahpar-III systems, which can carry 6 to 8 units.[1][3]
