Codepoint

This template used x2299 codepoint for "⊙", the Euclidean Inner Product (Dot-Product) mathematical operator. This is wrong. I have exchanged it for codepoint x2609, the Unicode symbol for the Sun, "☉" instead. 64.229.101.183 (talk) 02:14, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, while semantically correct, this probably has to be reverted on rendering grounds: this is not uncommon for Chrome to ignore variation selector U+FE0E; which results in displaying Sun emoji (instead of an excepted symbol) on mobile devices. Something, that should NOT occur in formulas. A possible alternate workaround (given lack of Google's fix for a bug) would be to define nodesktop css class in our MediaWiki:Common.css and use x2299 in nodesktop and proper unicode symbol (x2609) in nomobile <span>'s. Wrapping in the middle of the unit

Use of this template with the link=y option allows the unit to wrap between the "M" and the "☉", which is clearly undesirable. This doesn't seem to happen when the unit is not linked. Because it is piped? Not being sure why it happens, I'm not sure on the best way to fix it. Lithopsian (talk) 16:53, 26 June 2025 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 23 April 2026

Change the italicizing double ticks around the letter M (M) to HTML "var" tags (M), on both lines where this appears.

Or do something else that will cause the template to render properly when immediately adjacent to italicized text. As an example, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_gravitational_parameter#Heliocentric_gravitational_constant where the text "''G''{{Solar mass}}" is presumably being expanded to "''G''''M''<sub>☉</sub>" and then the four consecutive tick marks are playing havoc with the following sentences.

I recommend HTML "var" tags only because that's what https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Earth_mass and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Lunar_mass use, and they don't appear to have those problems.

While looking for links to this template in case there was some reason I might have overlooked, I noticed that https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Solar_radius also uses double ticks, while https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Solar_luminosity uses "var" tags. Both render properly in a couple infoboxes I looked at (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algol). ~2026-24985-62 (talk) 21:14, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
