Usage
This template {{WikiProject Engineering}} adds articles to subcategories of Category:WikiProject Engineering articles and is a self-reference. Please add it to talk pages of relevant articles and non-article pages.
This template should be transcluded as {{WikiProject Engineering}} and not substituted {{subst:}} because it employs conditional code. Transclusion also allows easy updating of all the WikiProject's talk pages without having to edit thousands of pages individually. For examples of how the template will appear under various parameter scenarios, please see WikiProject Engineering/Examples.
The template also employs several optional data field parameters as described below. The full syntax is as follows:

Parameters legend
- class – This WikiProject follows Project-Independent Quality Assessment. Please add valid
|class=values to {{WikiProject banner shell}} instead of this WikiProject. Valid class values can be found at Wikipedia:Content assessment. - importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project's importance scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave
|importance=blank or omit the parameter. - attention – set
|attention=yesif the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.- This parameter populates Category:Engineering articles needing attention.
- listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for Nikola Tesla, use
|listas=Tesla, Nikolaso that the talk page will show up in the T's and not the N's of the various assessment and administrative categories). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter. If the article is using {{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add|listas=to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required. - unref – set
|unref=yesif the page needs additional references or inline citations. Leave blank or delete if not.- This parameter populates Category:Unreferenced Engineering articles.
- past-collaboration: Enter Month Year (e.g., "
|past-collaboration=February 2007") if the page previously was selected as the WikiProject's collaboration of the week/month. Leave blank or delete if not. - past-selected-article: Enter Month Year (e.g., "
|past-selected-article=March 2007") if the article previously was selected as the Engineering Portal's article of the month. Leave blank or delete if not. - past-selected-picture: Enter Month Year (e.g., "
|past-selected-picture=March 2008") if the image previously was selected as the Engineering Portal's picture of the month. Leave blank or delete if not.
- imageneeded – set
|imageneeded=yesif the article needs a photograph, map, drawing, diagram, equation, or other image be added to the page. Leave blank or delete if not. - imagedetails (appears only if imageneeded is set to yes) - Additional details to describe the image that is requested.
- in - Used in conjunction with the imageneeded parameter to place the image request into a specific location category. Leave blank or delete if not.
- Additional in2 and in3 - Used in conjunction with the imageneeded parameter to specify up to two more location categories.
- This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested images of engineering subjects.
- category – set
|category=noif, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
Notes
To avoid needlessly cluttering up talk pages, it is usually appropriate to remove any unused parameters from the template. A common initial configuration for the template includes the following basic parameters:
