Requested move 8 October 2025
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: no consensus. The discussion attracted limited participation with one editor supporting the move per WP:NATURALDAB and another opposing, while a third participant raised concerns about an impending official renaming. As there is no clear consensus to move at this time, the page remains at its current title. (closed by non-admin page mover) --Warm Regards, Abhiimanyu7 talk 18:19, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
People's Assembly of Syria → People's Assembly (Syria) – I feel 'People's Assembly (Syria)' is a more fitting name, since it is officially referred to as simply 'People's Assembly'. Support - per nom Freedoxm (talk · contribs) 17:29, 8 October 2025 (UTC)- Oppose - The current name is fine. Freedoxm (talk · contribs) 18:05, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
- Support, 'People's Assembly of Syria' doesn't come near to being COMMONNAME, and the actual name of the legislature is just the People's Assembly.
- If this were the only 'People's Assembly' then that would be the best name, but other historical and current bodies share the name, thus disambiguation is required. People's Assembly (Syria) seems a better way to disambiguate the subject DimensionalFusion (talk · she/her) 19:09, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
- Wait: I do agree that putting the name in parentheses is more consistent based on several other legislature pages I've seen with a similar situation. However, there is an ongoing discussion in Syria about renaming the legislature, so I wouldn't exactly be in a rush to move around a page with 400+ links only to have to move it again in a month. People's Assembly of Syria → Syrian People's Assembly – More commonly referred to as the latter by SANA, as seen on these articles (https://sana.sy/en/syria/2329045/, https://sana.sy/en/syria/2332258/, https://sana.sy/en/politics/2329320/) Caltine (talk) 16:11, 27 July 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. - Oppose – A discussion about moving this article was held previously. The proposed name from that discussion, People's Assembly (Syria), is a better alternative and more consistent with Wikipedia naming conventions.
- The Assembly's official name, according to the Constitutional Declaration, is the People's Assembly. SANA, other English-language news outlets, and the Assembly's own social media accounts use People's Assembly, Syrian People's Assembly, and People's Assembly of Syria more or less interchangeably. It's also worth noting that Arabic makes no distinction between Syrian People's Assembly and People's Assembly of Syria — both are rendered as Syrian People's Assembly in Arabic.
- That said, for the same reason the previous discussion failed to reach consensus, there is ongoing discussion, both inside and outside the Assembly, about changing the institution's name entirely. Whatever the best title turns out to be, it seems preferable to wait and see whether the Assembly does in fact receive a new name before making this move. Eyad0308 (talk) 20:40, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- I do agree, though I haven't heard any mentions of a potential name change from SANA even after the first session of the new People's Assembly, leading me to assume that they may retain the 'People's Assembly' name, hence why I decided to make this request. Caltine (talk) 14:00, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- Well, this is to be expected. When this was previously discussed (for example during the elections), the response was that the Assembly itself should decide. Now, while the Assembly has convened, it was, until yesterday, preoccupied with more essential matters — electing its Bureau and adopting its rules of procedure. Now that these two matters are settled, the Assembly can begin its legislative work. If, even after that, there's no indication the name will be changed, then I agree it will most likely not change in the foreseeable future. Eyad0308 (talk) 08:22, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose - highly inconsistent if you compare it to other parliaments. I'm opposed to any change of this name change that deviates from the current name. NeoSyria\Freedoxm (talk · contribs) 00:50, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Guaranteed Seats
[edit]There seem's to be a mistake or at least a lack of clarity about the number of seats guaranteed to Baath Party / PNF. The article states that the constitution grants 167 seats to the Party, that would be two thirds. However, no exact number of seats is mentionend in either the old or new version of the constitution. § 53 just says that "at least half" of the seats are granted to "workers and peasants" (which euphemistically stands for the Party of course). If no one can present a credible source that, e.g. by an additional law, 167 (the German article states 127) seats are guaranteed to the Party, I will remove that part and simply write that at least half of the seats have to go to the working class, which is according to official Syrian view by definition represented by the Baath Party. -- Schumeru (talk) 20:26, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Change this article to past tense
[edit]Assad's regime and Bathist Syria has fallen, so we need to update this to past tense. IdahoanLover (talk) 04:00, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Muslim Brotherhood as a political group
[edit]Since MP's affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood of Syria were elected to the People's Assembly, are they treated as a separate political group or are they still part of the Independent MP's? JohnMcEwan20 (talk) 07:59, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- My view is that they should still be considered independent MPs, at least for the time being. The phrase "affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood" is quite vague. It could refer to actual membership in the organisation, just believing in the same ideology, or anything in between. It is also not known which MPs are being referred to.
- Given that, I'm not sure that designating them as a separate political group would add much value at this stage. It would probably be better to wait and see what parliamentary blocs, groups, or parties emerge once the People's Assembly begins its work, and then adjust the classifications accordingly. Eyad0308 (talk) 09:32, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for your swift reply! And I totally agree with you. JohnMcEwan20 (talk) 09:34, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
The “Independent Revolutionary Movement “?
[edit]This party is too obscure to warrant any inclusion, there is no information about it, not even on the affiliated MPs wiki or related media, I think it should be removed & its MP moved to the independent bench. ~2026-38181-99 (talk) 17:55, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- I agree. Additionally, the article about the MP in question (Naser al-Hariri) appears to conflate two different individuals with similar Arabic names. Assuming the “Independent Revolutionary Movement” is indeed a real party, it seems that the appointed MP is not the same person as the one affiliated with it. Eyad0308 (talk) 13:51, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
