Violetear → ColibriColibri – Colibri is the formal scientific genus name used by authoritative ornithological sources, whereas "violetear" is primarily a vernacular element in the English names of the individual species (e.g. Mexican Violetear, Brown Violetear). I have not found comparably strong evidence that "Violetear" is an established English common name specifically for the genus as a taxonomic group. Support - While a birder might say "I saw a violetear" when describing their activities, that's probably the only context the term would be used in place of the genus, or a species common name. This complies with WP:FAUNA naming. - In solidarity, UtherSRG (talk) 15:18, 29 August 2026 (UTC)

The Spanish word colibrí is more general, so this is quite confusing. I'm inclined to oppose and see the dab page moved back. No objection to Colibri (genus) or something. Srnec (talk) 02:08, 2 September 2026 (UTC)

Are scientific names 'this language'? We always italicize them. :-) In any case, the dab page shows that the word has been used frequently in English and I suspect with the general meaning in mind, as from, e.g., French colibri. Oppose. They're a coherent group and (very importantly, unlike the concurrent Parrotbill move discussion) they all share the same unique English group name; Srnec's point about the wider use of colibri in Spanish (and some other languages) for any hummingbird is also important.
