Logo description

[edit]

Maxeto0910, let’s please avoid any edit warring over this, I’ve restored the last stable version for now until there’s consensus. On the wording itself, I don't think over detail or ambiguity really applies here. As explained, the mere addition of the word "variant" in the description hardly warrants as over detail, and again, it refers to any alteration of any form to the original logo. The extra explanation in the footnote is basically doing the real descriptive work, and thus belongs in the caption as opposed to being tucked away. As per WP:CAPTION, captions should be both succinct and informative; as such the caption should clear on its own without needing to check a note for basic context, therefore keeping it simple and inline is the most straightforward option. The version you restored is ambiguous.
It is not apparent from the description "Variant of the Apple logo used since 1977" if that year applies to this specific variant or to the original one.
My position: Either leave the detail out and just state that this is the Apple logo used since 1999, or use a proper clarification that avoids said ambiguity and may require an efn.
The extra explanation in the footnote is basically doing the real descriptive work
No. It is merely providing additional detail, which is not necessary (not saying that I'm opposed to keeping it, just saying it isn't required). Maxeto0910 (talk) 01:25, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Maxeto0910, again, let's please not make any more changes to the status quo version until there's consensus. QuestFour (talk) 23:32, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
You did not respond to my comment in over 4 days. Also, it is a fact that the current version you restored is ambiguous, therefore problematic, and for that reason should not be the version to keep until consensus is reached. Also, contrary to what you asserted in your edit summary, that version was never the "stable version". Versions without that ambiguous wording were in the infobox far longer. Tim's community letter, should it be included?

[edit]

Tim Cook posted a letter to the community here about his resignation and his successor:

I think it should be included on the main Apple Inc. page as an artifact of the company's history.

Could we add this to the article?

LOGO 1998 or 1999

[edit]

I know there is much contention about the late 1998s but it seems that the wording is incorrect. The monochrome logos Where in use since 1998. I'm looking at the packaging for a "Wallstreet" 1998 PowerBook released may 1998 and all the Logos on the packaging and laptop are black or white monochrome save for a small rainbow one. So saying that the Logo used since 1999 is incorrect.

Here is another source that says the monochrome logo became the official one in 1998
Also cowboy bebop is from 1998 so there's that. ~2026-24566-52 (talk) 20:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Created by Rob Janoff, the now-iconic rainbow Apple logo was used from April 1977 until August 26, 1999. Despite the solid version becoming Apple's main logo in 1998, the rainbow version would linger for another year. Since the logo's introduction, the design itself has remained unchanged. This logo is still referenced in various advertisements and was briefly brought back in 2021 in an advertisement for the iMac M1. ~2026-24566-52 (talk) 20:17, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Change multinational technology company to transnational technology corporation ~2026-25365-38 (talk) 09:17, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now: I did some research into this and the differences between multinational and transnational companies, and based on what I found, Apple is considered a primarily multinational company with characteristics often found in transnational companies. This is my personal take on it, and another editor may disagree with my conclusion, but at this time, I see no reason to change it. GSK (talk • edits) 14:04, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Key people box, it's current ceo (Tim Cook) and it's chairman are sufficient.

About key people box. Why add it's CFO or a not-yet in tenure CEO? ~2026-27997-49 (talk) 17:10, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Weeks away from bankruptcy....

[edit]

There's no reliable source for this claim, nor does it make any sense: "With Apple only weeks away from bankruptcy, the board preferred NeXTSTEP and purchased NeXT in late 1996 for $400 million, retaining Steve Jobs."

It's rather unlikely that it was able to spend $400 million to takeover another company, while being weeks away from bankruptcy. The source seems to be an opionm piece in a newsletter and podcast. Mevsherd (talk) 01:49, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

This article actually uses Apple's financial reports as sources, which is helpful. This one says:

"The Company believes that its balances of cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments, and continued short-term borrowings from banks, will be sufficient to meet its cash requirements over the next twelve months. Expected cash requirements over the next twelve months include an estimated $130 million to effect actions under the restructuring plan, most of which will be effected during the first half of fiscal 1998."

So, Apple officially stated it was not near bankruptcy, it spent $400 million to takeover Next, and another $100 million to buyout a clone company. The "90 days to bankruptcy" seems to come from Jobs touting his own story and leadership, and, since it's a good story, quickly spread. We really should not be repeating memes and rumors, no matter how widespread they are in the media. The question is: do Wikipedia's processes and standards have the ability to filter out rumors that are widespread in normally reliable sources?

Look, this is silly: "With Apple only weeks away from bankruptcy, the board preferred NeXTSTEP and purchased NeXT in late 1996 for $400 million, retaining Steve Jobs" A company that is weeks away from bankruptcy does not go around buying out other companies. Also, the narrative has now changed from months away to weeks.
