The Daewoo T platform name refers to a family of B-segment front-wheel-drive automobile platforms originally developed by Daewoo Motors and later by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology. The first platform in the series was the T100, which underpinned the Daewoo Lanos. Its successor, the GM Daewoo T200, was introduced in 2002 and served as the basis for the Daewoo Kalos and numerous rebadged derivatives marketed worldwide under the Chevrolet, Pontiac, Holden, Suzuki, and Daewoo brands.

The T200 was the first all-new vehicle architecture developed by GM Daewoo following the company's establishment in 2002. Designed as a global platform, it was engineered to accommodate multiple body styles while complying with the safety, emissions, and regulatory requirements of markets around the world.

Development of the T200 platform began during the final years of Daewoo Motor as the planned replacement for the aging Lanos. After Daewoo Motor entered financial insolvency in 1999, development continued under GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, which was established following General Motors' acquisition of the company's principal assets in 2002.

The production version entered the market in March 2002 with the introduction of the Daewoo Kalos, the first passenger car developed and launched by GM Daewoo. Designed as a global B-segment vehicle, the Kalos was marketed in more than 120 countries under several General Motors brands.

Compared with the previous T100 architecture, the T200 platform was engineered from the outset to accommodate both hatchback and sedan body styles while complying with increasingly stringent crash safety and emissions regulations in Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania.

Technical characteristics

The T200 platform employs a transverse front-engine, front-wheel-drive configuration. Its chassis incorporates:

  • Independent MacPherson strut front suspension;
  • Semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension;
  • Rack-and-pinion steering, with hydraulic power assistance on most variants;
  • Front ventilated disc brakes and rear drum brakes on the majority of models.

The platform was designed around a wheelbase of approximately 2,480 mm and supported naturally aspirated petrol engines ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 litres. Available transmissions included five-speed manual and four-speed automatic gearboxes.

Design

The exterior styling of the T200-based Kalos was created by the Italian design firm Italdesign Giugiaro. Its design was derived from the Daewoo Kalos Dream concept car, which debuted at the 2000 Paris Motor Show.

To accommodate regional branding strategies, T200-based vehicles were offered with market-specific front-end styling, lighting units and trim levels depending on the country of sale.

Evolution

In 2005, GM Daewoo introduced the T250, a comprehensive revision of the T200 architecture. Although it retained the same basic platform structure and wheelbase, the updated version featured redesigned body panels, improved structural rigidity, enhanced occupant safety and revised powertrains.

Production of T200-derived vehicles continued in several markets until the early 2010s, after which the architecture was gradually replaced by the GM Daewoo T300 platform.
