Twinhead International Corp. (Template:Lang-zh-Hant) is a Taiwanese manufacturer of laptops and tablets headquartered in Taipei. The company was established on 27 February 1984 and is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under stock code 2364.[1]
Twinhead initially produced computer components before entering desktop and portable computer production. It began concentrating its resources on notebook computers in 1991.[2] During the 2000s, the company expanded into industrial-grade notebook computers.[3] Twinhead identifies Durabook as its core brand.[4]
History
[edit]Early development
[edit]Twinhead was established in 1984 by engineers who had worked at Philips. Its principal founders, Stanley Chiang and Charles Chen, had studied electrical engineering together at National Taiwan University. The company's early products included application-specific integrated circuit chips and computer add-on cards.[2]
Twinhead entered desktop personal-computer assembly in 1987 and portable-computer production in 1989. From 1991, it concentrated its main resources on notebook computers.[2]
Notebook business in the 1990s
[edit]In a 1998 interview with iThome, Twinhead described its production and marketing mix as 60 percent original equipment manufacturing, 30 percent own-brand business and 10 percent original design manufacturing.[5]
In 1999, iThome reported that Twinhead had ranked first in Taiwan's domestic notebook-computer sales for five consecutive years. At the time, the company was expanding its range of notebook accessories and considering the establishment of dedicated retail stores.[6]
A 2016 history of Taiwan's laptop industry stated that Twinhead obtained laptop contract orders from United States companies through its design-engineering capabilities. The article also described co-founder Yi-Cheng Chen as a prominent computer designer in Taiwan and characterised Twinhead's own-brand notebook business as highly ranked during the 1990s.[7]
Restructuring and proposed merger
[edit]On 27 February 2001, Twinhead eliminated 117 positions at its Kaohsiung plant, including production, administrative and operational employees. iThome reported that the reduction represented approximately 11.7 percent of the company's workforce at the time. Company representatives attributed the reductions to unused production capacity and an effort to improve competitiveness, and denied that they had been caused by the proposed merger with Uniwill Computer Corp.[8]
Twinhead and Uniwill announced their proposed merger on 14 March 2001. Contemporary reporting described the transaction as an attempt to combine Uniwill's contract-manufacturing operations with Twinhead's own-brand business while increasing production scale and reducing purchasing costs.[9]
The Taiwan Fair Trade Commission approved Twinhead's application in July 2001. Under the proposal, Twinhead would have been the surviving company and Uniwill would have been dissolved.[10] The transaction was nevertheless abandoned after it failed to gain sufficient support from Uniwill shareholders in two votes.[11]
Expansion into industrial-grade computing
[edit]In 2008, iThome reported that Twinhead had adjusted its operating direction approximately two years earlier, extending its core business from commercial notebook computers into the industrial-grade notebook market. The industrial business used a lower-volume, higher-variety production model rather than the large-volume model used industrial-grade notebook market. for commercial notebooks.[3]
To support the change, Twinhead carried out a major overhaul of its enterprise resource planning system. The nine-month project included substantial revisions to the company's procurement and order-management processes and connected operations in Taipei, Kaohsiung and Kunshan.[3]
Operations and brand
[edit]Twinhead's official corporate information lists laptops and tablets as its main products. The company is headquartered in Neihu District, Taipei, and its shares trade on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under stock code 2364.[1]
The company identifies Durabook as its core brand. Twinhead markets rugged laptop and tablet computers under the Durabook name.[4]
