Candace Chong Mui-ngam (Chinese: 莊梅岩; Jyutping: zong1 mui4 ngaam4) is a Hong Kong playwright whose plays include French Kiss (2005), Murder in San José (2009) and The Wild Boar (2012). She has won the Hong Kong Drama Award for Best Script seven times.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Chong was born in Fujian, China in 1976.[2] The characters “Mui-ngam" (梅岩) in her name were derived from her parents' ancestral origins.[3] She spent her early childhood in Fujian, where her father was a director of Fujian's traditional Liyuan opera and her mother worked as a primary school teacher.[4] Both parents were part of the Wengongtuan [zh] (文工團), organized by the People's Liberation Army.[4] Chong also has a younger brother who is three years her junior.[5] At the age of three, she moved to Hong Kong with her family.[6]

After settling in Hong Kong, her father worked as a security guard and her mother became a factory worker.[5] The family lived on Whitty Street in Shek Tong Tsui.[3] She attended the afternoon session of Kau Yan School [zh],[citation needed] graduating from Primary Six in 1989,[citation needed] before enrolling at St. Paul's Co-educational College.[7] There, she studied in the arts stream and performed particularly well in Chinese.[3] She also developed an early interest in theatre, directing and writing short plays for school projects.[3] Upon graduating from secondary school in 1995, Chong enrolled at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she studied psychology in the Faculty of Social Science and was a member of Shaw College.[4][8][9] She completed her degree in 1999,[9] then pursued playwriting at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts before moving to London to earn a master's degree at Royal Holloway, University of London.[1]

Career

[edit]

After completing her formal education, Chong joined the Chung Ying Theatre Company where she wrote her plays[10] Alive in the Mortuary (2003), Shall We Go to Mars? (2005), French Kiss (2005), Murder in San José (2009) and The Wild Boar (2012).[11] In 2011 she worked with American composer Huang Ruo to write a libretto for the opera Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The completed work premiered at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and later was adapted worldwide.[12]
