Avarachan & Sons is a 2026 Indian Malayalam-language family comedy-drama film directed by Thamby and produced by Listin Stephen under the banner of Magic Frames. The film stars Biju Menon in the titular role, alongside Sreenath Bhasi, Ganapathi, Grace Antony, Vinay Forrt, and Pauly Valsan. [1] [2]

Plot

[edit]

Set against the coastal backdrop of Chellanam, the story follows Avarachan (Biju Menon), a heavy-drinking, wayward, and rowdy father whose reckless actions frequently ignite local feuds and tension. His two grown-up sons, Jaison (Sreenath Bhasi) and Jaimon (Ganapathy), constantly find themselves running damage control to clear up messes caused by their father. [3]

Following a major scandal and a booze-fueled escalation that triggers a violent local conflict, Avarachan is packed off and forced to flee his hometown, hiding out in his elder sister Eliyamma's (Pauly Valsan) home in the high ranges and hills of North Kerala. Cut off from his usual environment, the displacement forces the dysfunctional family and their surrounding social relationships—including a local neighbor Bincy (Grace Antony) and other eccentric characters—through a chaotic process of self-discovery and unexpected reconciliation.

Development

[edit]

The project was officially announced as a family-oriented comedy-drama exploring generational friction and dysfunctional family dynamics. Directed by debutant/filmmaker Amal Sheela Thamby and scripted with writer Joseph Vijeesh, the film was backed by producer Listin Stephen under his production house Magic Frames. The narrative drew thematic conceptual comparisons to regional slice-of-life portraits of brotherhood and familial friction, focusing distinctively on a father-sons dynamic. [4] [5] [6]

Filming

[edit]

Principal photography took place across diverse landscapes in Kerala, transitioning from the coastal regions of Chellanam in Ernakulam district to the scenic, mist-covered high ranges and hill stations of North Kerala. Cinematography for the film was handled by Sajith Purushan, who captured both the gritty coastal atmosphere and the tranquil greens of the northern hills. [7] [8]

Music

[edit]

The music and background score for Avarachan & Sons were composed by Sanal Dev were composed for a light-hearted template. Pre-release promotional tracks, including the popular "Quarter Song," were rolled out weeks ahead of the premiere to build audience traction.

Release

[edit]

Avarachan & Sons was theatrically released globally on October 1, 2026 (with widespread reviews rolling out by October 2–3, 2026), receiving a UA certification with a total runtime of 2 hours and 14 minutes. Distributed heavily by Magic Frames, the film opened to generally mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics largely praising Biju Menon's anchoring lead performance and the nostalgic, old-fashioned family entertainer vibe.
