Xoaher Musavvir (also credited as Joaher Musavvir Jyoti; Bengali: জোয়াহের মুসাভির; is a Bangladeshi cinematographer, filmmaker and producer. He is known for his work on feature films, short films and streaming series, and has collaborated with directors including Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, Nuhash Humayun, Raihan Rafi and Leesa Gazi. His cinematography has been recognized internationally, including a Zee Critics' Choice Award for Best Cinematography for the short film The Silent Echo.[1]
Career
[edit]Musavvir was born in Bangladesh.[2] He moved to Prague to study filmmaking and cinematography.[1] He co-founded Zinga Films, a production company based in Prague and Dhaka.[3] In 2015, he co-directed and served as cinematographer on Sophie, with Swedish director Inga Kempe.[4] Musavvir served as cinematographer on The Silent Echo (2021), a Nepali-language short film directed by Indian filmmaker Suman Sen.[1] In April 2023, Musavvir won the Best Cinematography award at the 5th Zee Critics' Choice Awards in Mumbai for his work on the film. The film also won Best Short Film at the ceremony.[1]
Musavvir served as cinematographer on Dui Shaw (2024), an anthology horror series directed by Nuhash Humayun. The series premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2025 and screened at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival.[5]A review in Asian Movie Pulse noted that Humayun "uses a clever approach as he does not rely on cheap thrills, but rather on atmosphere, established by a great production design, Xoaher Musavvir's cinematography and the performances."[5]
Musavvir served as director of photography on Mejbaur Rahman Sumon's feature film Roid (2026), starring Nazifa Tushi and Mostafizur Noor Imran.[6] A review in The Daily Star described his cinematography as "deeply contemplative" and noted that "frames breathe with humidity, darkness, texture, and waiting." The review further stated that "landscapes are never reduced to visual beauty alone. Mud, rain, skin, trees, shadows, and empty spaces become emotional surfaces carrying subconscious tension."[6]
Musavvir worked with British-Bangladeshi filmmaker Leesa Gazi as director of photography on her debut fiction feature Barir Naam Shahana (A House Named Shahana).[7] The film was selected for the Mumbai Film Festival and the Kolkata People's Film Festival.[7]
Musavvir served as director of photography on Pressure Cooker (2026), directed by Raihan Rafi. The film features an ensemble cast including Shobnom Bubly, Nazifa Tushi, Maria Shanta and Snigdha Chowdhury. It premiered during Eid al-Fitr 2026 and was selected as the opening film of the London Bengali Film Festival.[8]
Musavvir worked as cinematographer on Short-film Dhet!, which screened at SXSW London and the Sitges Film Festival.[9] He has also worked on the streaming series Jehanabad – Of Love & War (2023), Bullets (2023) and Scooty (2022).[2]
