This is a page for requesting one-off database queries for certain criteria. Users who are interested and able to perform SQL queries on the projects can provide results from the Quarry website.

You may also be interested in the following:

  • If you are interested in writing SQL queries or helping out here, visit our tips page.
  • If you need to obtain a list of pages that meet certain criteria, consider using PetScan (user manual) or the default search. PetScan can generate lists of articles in subcategories, articles which transclude some template, etc.
  • If you need to make changes to a number of articles based on a particular query, you can post to the bot requests page, depending on how many changes are needed.
  • For long-term review and checking, database reports are available.

The database replicas do not have access to page content, so requests which require checking wikitext cannot be answered with database queries. In particular, there is no way to query for template parameters or anything related to references. However, someone may be able to assist by querying in another way (for example, checking for external links rather than references) or suggest an alternative tool.

Four queries

[edit]

Cryptic, (or someone else) I am requesting the following queries. Hope this isn't too much work. If possible copy some of these to subpages of Wikipedia:Database reports:

  • A query that would list all articles created by users where their username is the same as the article title, like if User:Example were to create the article Example.
  • A version of that query only featuring articles in Category:Articles lacking sources
  • A version of that query only featuring articles also within the "Single-article users" query
  • A version of the Templateless articles query only featuring articles also within the "Single-article users" query

(Would those last two take too long?) RanDom 404 (talk) 15:00, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

A query here addresses the first one. I've taken "articles" to mean "mainspace pages which are not currently redirects". As for the second one, my effort purports to show that there aren't any, but that may well be a bug. (Do you have any examples?) I've not attempted the third or fourth queries. Someone may like to combine the single-user query above with this query once the definitions are clear. Certes (talk) 16:00, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's going to be missing just about all article titles with spaces in them. actor_name is usually like user_name in that it doesn't replace spaces with underscores the way page_title does. Most (all?) exceptions are from imported edits, which is why Enter_the_Dragon is the only one in your results that shows up. —Cryptic 16:09, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
D'oh, I should have spotted that they were all single words! Thank you. There is also the issue of what is an "article": many pages have switched between article, redirect and dab over the years and it might be pragmatic just to declare that anything with rev_len > 100 was created as an article. And I expect many of them have had a page move which means the current title doesn't match that at creation. A bit of a minefield calling for many heuristics. Certes (talk) 16:26, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
User renames is also a stumbling block, and harder to detect. —Cryptic 16:50, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Are there any updates on this, Cryptic? RanDom 404 (talk) 17:06, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
quarry:query/109922 is a fork of Certes' query with a column for edits to other pages, and also fixes the checked-for category to Category:All articles lacking sources (there are still only 18). quarry:query/109923 has mainspace pages with zero transclusions whose creator edited no other page. I don't think that criterion is a good indicator for what you're looking for; someone who creates a page as their first edit A) is already viewed with suspicion by their new page patroller, and B) can't have done that in mainspace to begin with, not for many years, so either someone moved it into mainspace for them or they're going to have another live edit at the redirect they left in Draft: or User: or wherever it was they moved it from. Besides, people who deliberately create hard-to-detect hoaxes usually build up a buffer of "good" edits to avoid those two issues: both lessening suspicion for A and getting able to create directly in mainspace without help for B. —Cryptic 02:50, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
This may be true with more elaborate hoaxes like Alan MacMasters, but in the majority of cases seen on the WP:HOAXLIST you'll find that the majority of Wikipedia's longest lasting hoaxes were created by users with few to no other edits. RanDom 404 (talk) 15:16, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

New Page Reviewers

[edit]

Could you please provide a lists from the 800+ holders of the WP:NPR user right who have:

  • not made a single edit to Wikipedia in the 12 months up to 30 September 2026 23:59 (UTC)
  • made less than 100 edits to Wikipedia in the 12 months up to 30 September 2026 23:59 (UTC)
  • not used the Page Curation tool in the 12 months up to 30 September 2026 23:59 (UTC)

Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:01, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

quarry:query/109891 has the full list and counts. Click on the columns to sort. —Cryptic 04:46, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for that quick reply. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:07, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
All of the listed users with 0 edits are known alt accounts, btw; there's a list in the query at Wikipedia:Database reports/Inactive users with advanced permissions (edit to see). —Cryptic 05:13, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
As a follow on, is it possible to obtain the number of new articles created over the last 30 days where the creators had less than 100 edits? Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:53, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
1594. Will vary widely depending on what you consider a "new article created"; "any page created from a redlink directly in the main namespace" was most convenient. Number of edits at time of creation isn't feasible. —Cryptic 16:47, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's perfect thanks. Very revealing - 2 users had fewer than 10 edits which is below the autoconfrmed threshold for creating new articles. If you can possibly now now provide:
  • How many of those creators are blocked or partially blocked?
  • How many of those 1945 articles are tagged with the {{AI-generated}} tag?
Then we are done, and many thanks again. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 21:37, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Edited and re-run in place. Those two users were manually granted the confirmed group; their logs say they were at editathons. —Cryptic 22:14, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

April 1 queries

[edit]

I'm requesting two additional queries:

  • A query for articles in Category:Articles lacking sources featuring only articles created on April 1
  • A version of the "Single-article users" query featuring only articles created on April 1

First one should be easier. RanDom 404 (talk) 19:42, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

To what purpose? What of use will, say, the first one tell you that Category:Articles lacking sources from April 2026 doesn't? I mean, I'm happy to datamine for things that will help Wikipedia, but if this is just to satisfy curiosity, I (or anyone else) am only likely to go along if it satisfies my/their curiosity too. —Cryptic 21:59, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Those categories are for articles tagged in April, not articles created in April. The reason I'm requesting the queries is because I'm trying to detect hoax articles. RanDom 404 (talk) 23:38, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
None for 2026/04/01, so I reran it for April 1 in any year. quarry:query/109921. Only user with no edits except to that page is Graham Taylor for Thebarton Senior College in 2006. —Cryptic 01:42, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
