- Category:2030 South Australian state election to Category:2030 elections in Australia – C2F. AusLondonder (talk) 16:06, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- @AusLondonder it should also be upmerged to the other three parent categories - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 19:31, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- I don't think it should be upmerged to Category:2020s in South Australia. The article is already in Category:Elections in South Australia and the only article in Category:March 2030 in Australia, which is dubious as there's no guarantee the election will take place in that month. AusLondonder (talk) 19:39, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- I've reparented the category from the erroneous 2020s category to Category:21st century in South Australia. I think that resolves the opposition re upmerging to all parents. The article is already held directly in the March 2030 category, so if that category is disputed then it should be nominated separately. – Fayenatic London 11:00, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]- Category:Trichy railway division to Category:Tiruchirappalli railway division – C2D: name correction ~2026-43920-27 (talk) 10:20, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- OBJECT Source used in head article calls it Trichy. Head article should be moved. DuncanHill (talk) 10:23, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- IMHO the opposition is groundless; the head article in this category is Tiruchirappalli railway division, whose text and citations mainly say Tiruchirappalli rather than Trichy. The article has never been at Trichy railway division and there is not even a redirect at that name. If DuncanHill is referring to the city article Tiruchirappalli, both names are used in citations there, and the long name predominates in the article text. I would process the speedy rename as valid under C2C and C2D despite the oppose !vote. – Fayenatic London 11:10, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Fayenatic london: needs to read the very first reference in Tiruchirappalli railway division and then he needs to apologise. DuncanHill (talk) 15:21, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- OK, I apologise for not guessing which source you were referring to. That source is indeed first, but I trust you can forgive me as the title of that citation does not include any version of the name. There are other sources which call it Trichy in the citation title, but these are newspaper headlines, where the short name is clearly chosen for reasons of space. Other formal sources such as the map (currently citation 17) use Tiruchirappalli or Tiruchchirappalli (double ch). As the head article has long been at this name, I still think this qualifies for C2D, and even more clearly for C2C. – Fayenatic London 22:12, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Top tip - the important bits of a citation are in the text, not the title. Oh, and try looking at the article talk page if the name has been questioned - you'll often find useful comments there. DuncanHill (talk) 22:22, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

- @Smasongarrison: It should be Category:Mass murders by ideology per the other subcategories of Category:Mass murder. Mclay1 (talk) 01:07, 3 May 2026 (UTC)
- Good catch. I wasn't sure if it should be plural or not. :) SMasonGarrison 01:10, 3 May 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose rename: The rename is inappropriate for most of the mass killings on Wikipedia, "murder" is a specific crime, it does not include all killings. A very large proportion of mass killings on Wikipedia occurred in active war zones, most definitions of murder exclude warfare. Even if the victims are civilians, very few war crimes are classified as "murder", these crimes have other names. Murder is also usually a crime at the national or state level, so given the only current subcategories are "by regime" the killers are the same people who wrote the laws around murder, and would determine that their own actions are legal. Late Night Coffee (ping me) 04:37, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

[edit]NEW NOMINATIONS
[edit]
August 12
[edit]All categories for userboxes
[edit]The nominated categories are split into four lists for convenience:
List 1: Specially handled cases |
|---|
|
List 4: Categories with suffix "_userbox_templates" in the name |
|---|
|
- Nominator's rationale:
The idea for this nomination was originally discussed at Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab)#Rename all userbox categories. Quote of the relevant parts:
The subcategories of Category:Userboxes have been organized by topic of the user templates for a long time. The subcategories are mostly called "Foobar user templates" for topic "foobar", with occasional variations like "Foobar-related user templates". These categories are not called "Foobar userboxes" because sometimes they contain topical user namespace templates, which aren't userboxes. Examples: Template:WikiProject Animals topicon (part of Category:WikiProject user templates), Template:The Malta Barnstar (part of Category:Malta user templates).
Corresponding to the practice of mixing userboxes with non-userbox templates, the category header template {{Template category}} treats parameters
|type=userand|type=userboxas synonyms (since Special:Diff/1039882654), outputting textThe pages listed in this category are meant to be user templates, including userboxes. This makes Category:Userboxes to be very confusing in itself. It is called "Userboxes", but almost none of the subcategories in its tree have the word "userboxes" in the name (this search shows 17 examples). Category:Userboxes contains userboxes, but also a random assortment of user namespace templates not related to the template {{Userbox}}.
I propose a plan for a big renaming of the subcategories of Category:Userboxes:
- Through one giant CfD nomination, rename all template categories with
|type=useror|type=userboxfrom "Foobar user templates" to "Foobar userboxes" or equivalent, depending on the naming scheme.
- This will inevitably cause miscategorization for topical templates which aren't userboxes. We'll live with it for a bit until the new category structure is established.
- One good example of a local naming scheme are subcategories of Language user templates, which are named "User templates ISO language code".
- Update template {{Template category}} to support two separate values
|type=userboxand|type=user. The wording will be something like:
|type=userboxes:The pages listed in this category are meant to be userboxes|type=user:The pages listed in this category are meant to be user templates, including award templates, top icons, userboxes etc.- Replace
|type=userwith|type=userboxin the renamed categories.- After the renaming, create a new structure under Category:User namespace templates. That way, all non-userbox templates can be grouped together with similarly themed userbox templates. This new structure doesn't need to be deep at the start of the process. Just the standard 10 topical categories (same as in Category:Wikipedia templates by topic) + Category:Wikipedia-related user templates would be enough for the purposes of this plan.
- Move miscategorized non-userbox templates from userbox-specific categories into the new category tree. At this step, the miscategorized templates can be found using WP:QUARRY requests and using WhatLinksHere, like Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Top icon.
[...]
The userboxes are an overwhelming majority of the user namespace templates. Splitting the userboxes from the rest will be similar to how Navigational boxes are split from the rest of templates (mostly in the realm of topical templates).
Some of the proposed nominations are reversing a previous CfD discussion, e.g. Category:DYK userboxes – Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 April 17#Category:DYK user templates.
The following lists of category pages that are excluded from this nomination, that might be useful to keep in mind for this nomination:
Category redirects with "userbox templates" in the name |
|---|
Other category pages excluded from this nomination, that show up in the relevant searches |
|---|
|
I tried to include all relevant categories in this nomination. Please do let me know if I missed any. —andrybak (talk) 21:57, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Here are two previous CfD nominations from 18-20 years ago that were mentioned at WP:VPI. They seem to be the source for the current convention of "Foobar user templates":
- —andrybak (talk) 22:46, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Support By now, this is the established terminology. It would also be consistent with sorting non-userbox user templates elsewhere. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 23:15, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
Critics of Israel by religion
[edit]- Propose deleting Category:Christian critics of Israel, Category:Muslim critics of Israel
- Nominator's rationale:
- WP:CATDEFINE: Categorization must be based on defining characteristics. Religion is not a defining characteristic of political opposition to a state unless that religious identity is the explicitly stated, primary motivation for that opposition, as established by reliable secondary sources.
- WP:NOR: Populating these categories requires editors to synthesize an individual's religion and their political stance. This constitutes original research/synthesis by implying a causal link ("These people are critics because they are [Religion]") that is not supported by secondary sources.
- WP:OVERCAT: These categories are currently tagged as Template:Non-diffusing subcategory of Category:Anti-Zionists. As they do not diffuse the parent category and offer no unique navigational utility, they are redundant and serve only as associative "tags."
- WP:BLPCAT: Categorizing living persons by intersecting sensitive identity markers (religion) with political controversies is discouraged. The label "critic" is imprecise, lacks a clear inclusion criterion, and risks misrepresenting subjects.
Recommendation: Delete these categories. The existing parent category, Category:Anti-Zionists, is the appropriate and sufficient venue for grouping these subjects based on their documented political activities. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biosketch (talk • contribs) 17:21, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

- Comment Some editor programmed the JJMC89 bot to empty the two categories mentioned at the top of this nomination even though this discssion was never closed. This should never had been done and those edits should be reverted and then I'll untag the two categories mentioned. Biosketch, you never tagged these two categories with a CFD notice and I'm sure you didn't notify the category creators. Did you follow the CFD instructions?
- Really, all actions that occurred outside of the comments on this discussion page should be undone, this nomination should be withdrawn and a proper CFD discussion set up. And as I said, some editor also used JJMC89 bot to carry their own personal feelings about how this discussion should be closed before consensus was reached. I think that action is worth a block for using JJMC89 bot to carry out their own personal editing tasks. Liz Read! Talk! 07:04, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

- Keep. I created these cateogires as they balance with Category:Anti-Zionist Jews. Why should "anti-zionists jews" have a cateogry and "christians" or "muslims" don't? Guz13 (talk) 15:11, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Zionism is a Jewish movement, hence balancing is not needed. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:08, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Zionism isn't only a Jewish movement. There have been many groups througout history who wanted and helped the Jews to return to Israel and Jerusalem.
- The other reason I created this was due to this category: Category:Muslim supporters of Israel. The category "Muslim critics of Israel" is the balance. Guz13 (talk) 04:14, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Keep or move to Category:Christian anti-Zionists/Category:Muslim anti-Zionists. I think the problem stems more from the title than from the existence of the category itself. It is possible to criticize Zionism from a religious perspective, and even if it is not explicitly stated that the perspective is religious, elements of faith can influence criticism of Zionism. ProgramT (talk) 07:44, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Keep I don’t see how WP:OPINIONCAT applies here. Having said categories help readers find individuals that fall into two independent characteristics- religion and being a critical of Israel (of course only if the info is well-sourced). These categories don't necessarily assume or imply that someone’s religion is the reason for their critical view, but that both characteristics are based. Also, I think that the fact that Wikipedia already has similar intersectional categories (Anti-Zionist Jews and Christian Zionists) points to their relevance and value. Literature in Sardinian language
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Literature in Sardinian language (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Sardinian literature
- Nominator's rationale: I fail to see the difference between Literature in Sardinian language and Sardinian literature, so it's best to upmerge the former into the latter... - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 03:18, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Comment This is just one of many such categories. As I was saying at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2026_June_18#Books by writer nationality, it is worth noting the wide variety that exists between "[Nationality] literature" articles in the mainspace. They often present very different definitions and are often ambiguous by saying "[Nationality] literature" can refer to either all literature in [X] language, literature produced in [X] country, or produced by [X] nationals or in other countries or languages. That inherent ambiguity is interesting at the article level and problematic/inconsistent at the category level. Οἶδα (talk) 05:00, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Merge, the poems in the subcategory are not necessarily in Sardinian language, they could be in Italian language instead. I have added each of these articles to Category:Sardinian language though. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:27, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Keep, the Sardinian literature cat is the broader one, including the works (in the subcat "literature in Sardinian language") but also the writers (who should perhps be grouped in a subcat as well) and more general articles. The difference between the parent cat and the subcat is thus quite clear. Fram (talk) 08:20, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Comment: Category:Literature in Sardinian language should be moved to Category:Sardinian-language literature if it's kept, in line with a majority of equivalent subcategories of Category:Literature by language. Ham II (talk) 19:14, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
Category:Films about Nazis
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Films about Nazis to Category:Films about Nazism
- Nominator's rationale: As with category Category:Films about neo-Nazis, there is no distinction between what is supposed to go into one category and what is supposed to go in the other. The child category is not any more focused on individual people. PARAKANYAA (talk) 02:09, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Support. I suppose the argument is that "about Nazism" means a particular focus on ideology, whereas "about Nazis" means a focus on characters who happen to be Nazis. But in practice, there's no distinction between what is supposed to go into one category and what is supposed to go in the other, per nom. I found a relevant CfD from 2011 where Films about communists was merged into Films about communism: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2011_December_30#Category:Films about communists. Relevant comment from The Bushranger: "
We shouldn't be categorising "films about communists" - it's nebulously defined. It's entirely possible to have a film about somebody who was a communist, with the film itself having nothing significant about communism in it at all. Films about communism, however is a very defining feature of said films, and the films about communists, in which their communist affiliation is the point of the film, are, indeed, films about communism.
" Indeed. Οἶδα (talk) 05:17, 12 August 2026 (UTC) - Merge, too much overlap. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:33, 12 August 2026 (UTC)

- Just delete, duplicate of Category:Serbian manuscripts. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:24, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- Totally oppose, keep and leave it as it is, Category:Medieval Serbian codices refers specifically to codices produced in medieval Serbia. In contrast, Category:Medieval Serbian literature covers Serbian manuscripts generally, including works that are not codices. The distinction is therefore precise and meaningful, rather than redundant. --Palatinosunriser (talk) 20:59, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

- Miroslav Gospels, Vukan Gospels, Zakonopravilo, etc are Serbian Medieval Codices, while Karyes Typikon and others are not Codices, but charters/manuscripts. It is necessary and important to have this distinguishing definition. --Palatinosunriser (talk) 03:36, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

Category:Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role winners
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Seems to be a duplicate? It was probably best to simply rename the category with the older history. Solidest (talk) 23:45, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Background The SAG Awards were renamed with the merger of the sponsoring organization into SAG-AFTRA. The main article, Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role as well as the overall article, Actor Awards, were boldly moved earlier this year.- RevelationDirect (talk) 02:06, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Reverse Merge (Leaving Redirect) Ideally the categories would be nominated together but, since we just have the one, it makes sene to go with the current name and leave a redirect. (If the consensus is to merge as nominated, again, I'd urge keeping the redirect.) I just tagged the target category with this discussion. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:08, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- I'd prefer we delete Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role winners and move the longstanding Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role Screen Actors Guild Award winners as the nominator suggested. Because the first category was only created in March of this year and the user who created it tried to redirect the older category into it instead of nominating it for renaming as is standard practice. Οἶδα (talk) 04:03, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- I have since reverted their edits on the basis that they had attempted to manually rename the category by emptying it and moving all articles to the newly-created category name. The old category only avoided deletion because Betty Logan reverted their edit to Julie Christie, so it wasn't empty. So in advance to those involved in deleting empty categories: yes I emptied the category. Emptying a category that was populated by way of emptying another category is not the same act. Οἶδα (talk) 04:50, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- The process here was definitely imperfect. Ideally the main article, Actor Awards, would have been renamed in a formal WP:RM and then we'd rename these as a group. RevelationDirect (talk) 12:21, 12 August 2026 (UTC)

Category:Levante UD footballers
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Levante UD footballers to Category:Levante UD players
- Nominator's rationale: A "Footballers" category would be better for a multi sport club like Barcelona or Real Madrid, though ironically both clubs categorise their footballers as just "players". Levante appears to be only a football club and there is no ambiguity what its players are playing. Subcategories of Category:Men's footballers in Spain by club look about 80% "players" - may be a case for a bigger discussion. Unknown Temptation (talk) 19:49, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

- I'm wondering if it should be the other way around. Looking at Category:Men's tennis tour tournaments by season navigational boxes, all 3 subcategories use "navigational boxes" rather than "templates". On the WTA side, Category:WTA Tour tournaments navigational boxes also uses "navigational boxes" instead of "templates". Category:Homes of United States Founding Fathers
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: A declined speedy. Category:Homes is a redirect to Category:Housing. United States Founding Fathers redirects to Founding Fathers of the United States. User:Namiba 14:14, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose, "homes" is appropriately named as some founders lived in cabins or other residences rather than actual houses. Nothing wrong with this correctly named category. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:51, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- Rename I think house is a better word. That is the best word to describe actual buildings. No, I am not convinced that anything mentioned above does not fall under house. Category:Works about animals playing sports
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Works about animals playing sports to Category:Animals in sport and Category:Works about sports
- Propose merging Category:Films about animals playing sports to Category:Films about animals and Category:Sports films
- Nominator's rationale: None of these are animals "playing" sports, miscategorization. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 11:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- How do you mean? Something like Air Bud seems to be abou an animal playing sports, no? Fram (talk) 08:11, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- "Playing" sports implies the animal can understand they are participating in a game, as opposed to just being "in" the game.
- I suppose it could instead be renamed "Category:Sports films about animals" to assuage this concern, since it does not imply anything about how the animal thinks. Category:Works about animals playing sports should still be merged as a WP:NARROWCAT, with most of its categories being miscategorized. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 10:28, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Again, how is e.g. Air Bud not about an animal playing sports? It's fiction, you know, real animals can not understand this (although even then it is usually said that they play fetch and so on), but in fiction this is no issue. How is Bonzo Goes to College not a film about an animal playing sports? Why would Hockey Homicide or The Olympic Champ not be a work about animals playing sports? Category:Cultural depictions
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Cultural depictions to Category:Cultural depictions by topic
- Nominator's rationale: It's a container category, so the title should not be open-ended. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 20:19, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose, container categories do not have to be "by" something. On the contrary, categories do not even have to be tagged as a container category when they are "by" something because then the containerization takes place naturally. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:58, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Category:African-American people by state or territory
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: WP:NARROWCAT, no other such diffusion at Category:African-American people Gjs238 (talk) 13:19, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose until the tree is further examined. This cat and its sole subcat duplicates Category:African Americans by state, which was created in 2013 and is in a separate place in the Category:African-American society tree. This creation appears to be an attempt to conform to prevailing consensus for a naming convention favoring "state or territory" over "state" (a lot of meaningless busy work which doesn't move the encyclopedia forward IMO, but I'm not going to argue with that consensus). Creating messy categorization without addressing existing categorization is the sort of half-measures the category's creator is famous for. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 16:50, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose This is distinct from Category:African Americans by state. That is atopic category, it contains articles where that is the subject. This is an article for biographies of African-Americans sorted by the state where they were resident. We have lots of other categories that sort people, in some cases by ethnicity and by state. This is a sub-cat of the African Americans by state specifically to have only biographical articles. In general we have seperate categories for biographies and non-biographies.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:36, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Deletebut NARROWCAT is the wrong reason to nominate this. There are likely hundreds of articles which might fit in this category. This category and those associated with it should be deleted because simply residing in a state and being African-American is a trivial intersection. Being involved in the politics of a state is a non-trivial intersection but simply residence and ethnicity is trivial.--User:Namiba 18:08, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

Category:Western Australian redirects

- Propose deleting Category:Western Australian suburb redirects (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Propose deleting Category:Western Australian town redirects (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Unusual category tree; redirects are generally not categorised by topic, with the exception of Middle-Earth redirects, whose rcats, as of writing this, seem to be at TfD as well though. (Note that this is also the only region-specific subcategory of Category:Geography redirects.) Looking at the members, it does not seem like the categories have been maintained after their creation in 2007. 1234qwer1234qwer4 03:12, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Delete as creator It was created 19 years ago to meet a need at the time, which clearly has lapsed. Orderinchaos 04:47, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- yeah na, dont delete there seams to be a lot of pages(about 370 in the two subcats) listed in there that probably should be considered as primary topics rather than be disambiguated. The categories do have a capacity as being useful for having captured something that might have a level ok bulk effort applied. Though the current policy is not to mass move these unnecessarily disambiguated articles as it'll impact thousands of other articles and create one unnecessary unwholely mess of redirects. Category:Hard Rock Cafe
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Hard Rock Cafe to Category:Hard Rock International
- Nominator's rationale: Alongside changing the parent page for this category from Hard Rock Cafe to Hard Rock International. My reasoning for it; Places in the category, such as Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City, are entirely separate from the cafes; in fact, that location does not have a Hard Rock Cafe. Neither does the former Hard Rock Casino Vancouver or Hard Rock Stadium. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa also does not have a Hard Rock Cafe. Making the category based strictly on the restaurant division is potentially confusing, and it would be better to rename it this way to better reflect and match the pages in this category. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino itself operates separately from the restaurant division. Hard Rock Vault also lacks a cafe, and Hard Rock Beach Club Choctaw was more of a summer-themed bar rather than a traditional cafe. Aspifi (talk | contributions) 15:02, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- New Main Article/Rename The nominator is correct, while HRI is over both the restaurant chain and the casino chain, this category is mostly the latter so it makes sense our naming catch up to the actual scope here. (Note: I removed Universal Orlando from this cat; their presence as a concession does not define the overall park.)- RevelationDirect (talk) 21:07, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]- Nominator's rationale: There is already Category:War on drugs. Magnolia677 (talk) 15:29, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

- I agree with Marcocapelle. "War on Drugs" is an expression that refers to actions in the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s by police and law enforcement agencies against drug smugglers or distributers. When I see the term "Drug war", I think of disputes between rival drug outfits, as happens in Mexico and Central America. I'm not sure how to make that more clear though. Are there subcategories? Liz Read! Talk! 20:44, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Keep. The OP has clearly misunderstood, perhaps due to regional differences in English. In American English the War on Drugs is a government program to fight against drug use and sale, while a drug war is a war between rival drug cartels or dealers. Not at all the same thing.--Srleffler (talk) 22:53, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

- Merge only to scirntists. I do not think we should assume Emrati people are Arab. Nor do I think we should merge natuonslity categories to ethnicity categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:34, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Merge only to scientists. It is not clear if the subject of the article is an ethnic Arab. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:29, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Merge to biologists. I don't think that we should be merging to Arab biologists.SMasonGarrison 22:21, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Merging to Biologists is not needed, both articles are already somewhere else further down in that tree. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:06, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Category:Catholic Church legal terminology
[edit]- Propose manually merging Category:Catholic Church legal terminology to Category:Canon law of the Catholic Church
- Nominator's rationale: manually merge, these aren't articles about terminology as a subject, they rather are articles about subjects in canon law. Move articles to the root category if they aren't already somewhere else in the Canon law of the Catholic Church tree, and uncontainerize the parent category. There is one exception, article List of Catholic canon law legal abbreviations, which should be moved to Category:Catholic terminology too. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:23, 30 July 2026 (UTC)

Category:Filipino Resistance activists
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OVERLAPCAT, all articles but one are also in Category:People of the Philippine Revolution and there is no reason to keep these articles apart. The one exception is Aman Dangat, that article just does not fit together with the rest. There is also not an article Filipino Resistance. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:38, 30 July 2026 (UTC)

Category:Wireless
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Wireless to Category:Wireless communication
- Nominator's rationale: There is not enough distinction between these two categories for both of them to exist. Category:Wireless has most of the articles at present, but Category:Wireless communication has a clearer title. I propose that we merge all the articles there. Srleffler (talk) 04:08, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Merge or reverse merge per nom. Note that the article title is just Wireless but that could be changed too. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:07, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Reverse Merge (or Merge) I would lean toward a reverse merge based on the main article but, regardless of the name, these are clearly overlapping and should be merged in some form. - RevelationDirect (talk) 20:05, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: I was going to propose this at CFDS under C2F (one eponymous article), but I have some further rationale. Per WP:CRYSTALBALL, we shouldn't expect each of these "2027 by country" subcats to have a bunch of non-eponymous articles and categories before the year in question has even begun. - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 01:36, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Category:Song recordings produced Mel-Man
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Highly unlikely typo. Always comes up first in ABC order results from Hotcat and gets in the way (which probably isn't a good enough reason on its own to delete, but it is very annoying). Category:American colonial governors
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, "American" is anachronistic considering the content of the category. Subcategories are already in Category:Spanish colonial governors and administrators if applicable. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:02, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Delete this is a merging of colonial governers for various colonial powers because the placea they were governors of at least in part later became part of the United States. Some of them were colonial governors in areas outside the US while the US existed. This includes officials of the French, Spanish, English/British and Russian Empire governments. It treats the current boumdaroes of the US as if they are the right, proper and correct boundaries. Ignoring the fact that these boundaries were brought about by historic events, including compromises in which people accepted less expamsive boundaroes than thry in some ways believed were the ideal boundaries. This category imposes an idea both spatially and temporarily beyomd where it actually existed. We should delete the category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:29, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
Category:34th century BC

Category:Fictional kobudōka
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: After removing two articles that didn't mention kobudō, what's left are four articles that mention the term only in the infobox, possibly based on WP:OR. - Propose merging Category:Template Category TOC on category with up to 100 pages (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to Category:Categories which use Category TOC without Automatic category TOC
- Nominator's rationale: The granular detail in these tracking categories is unnecessary, and they create lots of category loops. This proposal would simplify down to separate categories for whether or not {{Automatic category TOC}} is used, without the intricate detail. BlasterOfHouses (HouseBlaster's alt • talk • he/they) 14:28, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Question @HouseBlaster: Would this also require an update to the template? - RevelationDirect (talk) 20:08, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

Category:Indigenous languages of Central Amazonia
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: This and the various other region-based categories of Category:Indigenous languages of South America are poorly defined on the wiki if they are defined at all. They also do not align with region-based categories used on Category:Indigenous peoples of South America, though most of those at least are defined a bit better. Arctic Circle System (talk) 08:32, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- The categorization of all these wiki categories was based on the cultural areas of human groups in South America. This is like, for instance, the North American Southwest. I got them from professor Terrance Kaufman who specializes on indigenous languages. Note the cultural areas originate primarily from the time before the European invasions. It's just where people were distributed who tend to have similar cultural behaviors, material technology, etc. They may be heavily influenced by geography since that is a natural thing that restricts interactions between peoples. They seem to 'not align with region-based categories' because you don't about the cultural areas. So, they are actually based on regions. These regions, of course, probably do not align much with boundaries of modern nation-states since those are later regions defined by the migrants from across the ocean. If they are 'poorly defined,' then I guess wikipedia has no information about South American cultural areas (to its detriment). – ishwar (speak) 17:31, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- How are these regions defined? What sources exist about them? Where do they start and end? I would appreciate some more information about these cultural regions. Arctic Circle System (talk) 02:04, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

- If any change is needed, it should be a rename or a merge instead of a deletion. After all, the articles should stay in the tree of Category:Indigenous languages of South America. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:37, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Comment/Merge We don't have an article on Indigenous languages of Central Amazonia and, for that matter, even Central Amazonia which makes the definingness of this category hard to evaluate as a non-expert. We don't generally require main articles to start categories of course but in this case we're getting ahead of WP:V with sources. Maybe both those articles should exist but, in the mean time, merging to Category:Indigenous languages of South America make sense for now. - RevelationDirect (talk) 20:18, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

Category:Open source
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Open source to Category:Open content
- Nominator's rationale: unclear scope; the eponym article, Open source, has has poor categorization. fgnievinski (talk) 01:13, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Comment Open source at least has a main article while "Open content" is a redirect pointing to Free content. Not opposed to considering potential mergers here, but would prefer doing so in a way that follows the main articles. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:02, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Also notice the redirect and target article have separate categories: Category:Open content and Category:Free content. fgnievinski (talk) 13:08, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Comment, originally this was called "open methodologies", see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2013_May_31#Category:Open_methodologies. The rename was rather provisional. An alternative that was mentioned was Category:Openness but then it should rather become Category:Openness (information technology) per Openness#In information technology. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:56, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski: What do you think of an alternate rename to Category:Openness (information technology)? RevelationDirect (talk) 15:05, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- I just reviewed Open source and its scope seemed broader than Open-source software (OSS); "openness (IT)" seems a an invented synonym for OSS. I do like the idea of an umbrella Category:Openness, though. fgnievinski (talk) 12:59, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski: What do you think of an alternate rename to Category:Openness (information technology)? RevelationDirect (talk) 15:05, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- keep. Although related, open source and open content are two different concepts, indeed many of the articles under Category:open source should probably be under Category:open content. Category:Portraits of men
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: containerize per WP:EGRS, gender in itself is not a defining characteristic, but the subcategories remain valid. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:08, 15 July 2026 (UTC)
- Comment I can imagine arguments for why we should do away with these categories but, frankly, it's hard to think of a more defining characteristic for human beings than gender identity. It's one of the basic aspects that divide thousands of categories that have existed on this platform for decades. I think you need to have a better reason to do away with these categories than an argument that gender is non-defining. Liz Read! Talk! 03:30, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
- Keep, standard method of dividing portraits (men, women, groups, families, animals). See e.g. "The Painted Face. Portraits of Women in France, 1814-1914" or "History's Beauties. Women in the National Portrait Gallery, 1856-1900" or "Women and Portraits in Early Modern Europe. Gender, Agency, Identity", complete non-fiction books about the subject showing that gender is a defining characteristic. Fram (talk) 10:21, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Containerize per nom, clear case. -- Just N. (talk) 11:29, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Except for the fact that it isn't true that this is not a defining characteristic, like I clearly demonstrated? Fram (talk) 07:38, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- You demonstrated that it is a notable topic, worth an article. That is something else. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:56, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Then how do you decide if something is a defining characteristic or not? Why is "bathing" a defining characteristic of Gabrielle d'Estrées et une de ses sœurs, but "women" isn't? Why is it defining that Equestrian Portrait of Maria Amalia of Saxony is an equestrian portrait, but not that it is a portrait of a woman? Why is it defining that Comtesse de la Châtre is from 1789 and features a book, but not that it is the portrait of a woman? Why is it defining that Gold Marilyn Monroe is by an American, but not that it is of a woman? In what way is "portrait of a woman" not a defining characteristic of Portrait of a 62-year-old Woman. Fram (talk) 09:02, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Other categories, like Portraits by American artists, could very well be non-defining and thus deleted (or containerized). Very possible. But you raise an important question. Gender in itself is not a defining characteristic. But what about in visual art? Maybe not film (Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2026 June 12#Category:Films about women). But static art? What is the Venus de Milo if not a sculpture of a woman and a classical symbol of feminine beauty? Similarly I imagine most portraits of women in literature are described as being portraits of women. I could be missing something as I'm not as familiar with WP:EGRS cases. Would like to hear more rationale on emptying these categories. Οἶδα (talk) 21:42, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
