NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

August 12

[edit]

All categories for userboxes

[edit]

The nominated categories are split into four lists for convenience:

Nominator's rationale:

The idea for this nomination was originally discussed at Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab)#Rename all userbox categories. Quote of the relevant parts:

The subcategories of Category:Userboxes have been organized by topic of the user templates for a long time. The subcategories are mostly called "Foobar user templates" for topic "foobar", with occasional variations like "Foobar-related user templates". These categories are not called "Foobar userboxes" because sometimes they contain topical user namespace templates, which aren't userboxes. Examples: Template:WikiProject Animals topicon (part of Category:WikiProject user templates), Template:The Malta Barnstar (part of Category:Malta user templates).

Corresponding to the practice of mixing userboxes with non-userbox templates, the category header template {{Template category}} treats parameters |type=user and |type=userbox as synonyms (since Special:Diff/1039882654), outputting text The pages listed in this category are meant to be user templates, including userboxes.

This makes Category:Userboxes to be very confusing in itself. It is called "Userboxes", but almost none of the subcategories in its tree have the word "userboxes" in the name (this search shows 17 examples). Category:Userboxes contains userboxes, but also a random assortment of user namespace templates not related to the template {{Userbox}}.

I propose a plan for a big renaming of the subcategories of Category:Userboxes:

  1. Through one giant CfD nomination, rename all template categories with |type=user or |type=userbox from "Foobar user templates" to "Foobar userboxes" or equivalent, depending on the naming scheme.
    • This will inevitably cause miscategorization for topical templates which aren't userboxes. We'll live with it for a bit until the new category structure is established.
    • One good example of a local naming scheme are subcategories of Language user templates, which are named "User templates ISO language code".
  2. Update template {{Template category}} to support two separate values |type=userbox and |type=user. The wording will be something like:
    • |type=userboxes: The pages listed in this category are meant to be userboxes
    • |type=user: The pages listed in this category are meant to be user templates, including award templates, top icons, userboxes etc.
  3. Replace |type=user with |type=userbox in the renamed categories.
  4. After the renaming, create a new structure under Category:User namespace templates. That way, all non-userbox templates can be grouped together with similarly themed userbox templates. This new structure doesn't need to be deep at the start of the process. Just the standard 10 topical categories (same as in Category:Wikipedia templates by topic) + Category:Wikipedia-related user templates would be enough for the purposes of this plan.
  5. Move miscategorized non-userbox templates from userbox-specific categories into the new category tree. At this step, the miscategorized templates can be found using WP:QUARRY requests and using WhatLinksHere, like Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Top icon.

[...]

The userboxes are an overwhelming majority of the user namespace templates. Splitting the userboxes from the rest will be similar to how Navigational boxes are split from the rest of templates (mostly in the realm of topical templates).

Some of the proposed nominations are reversing a previous CfD discussion, e.g. Category:DYK userboxesWikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 April 17#Category:DYK user templates.

The following lists of category pages that are excluded from this nomination, that might be useful to keep in mind for this nomination:

I tried to include all relevant categories in this nomination. Please do let me know if I missed any. —andrybak (talk) 21:57, 12 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Here are two previous CfD nominations from 18-20 years ago that were mentioned at WP:VPI. They seem to be the source for the current convention of "Foobar user templates":

Support By now, this is the established terminology. It would also be consistent with sorting non-userbox user templates elsewhere. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 23:15, 12 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Critics of Israel by religion

[edit]
Nominator's rationale:
  • WP:CATDEFINE: Categorization must be based on defining characteristics. Religion is not a defining characteristic of political opposition to a state unless that religious identity is the explicitly stated, primary motivation for that opposition, as established by reliable secondary sources.
  • WP:NOR: Populating these categories requires editors to synthesize an individual's religion and their political stance. This constitutes original research/synthesis by implying a causal link ("These people are critics because they are [Religion]") that is not supported by secondary sources.
  • WP:OVERCAT: These categories are currently tagged as Template:Non-diffusing subcategory of Category:Anti-Zionists. As they do not diffuse the parent category and offer no unique navigational utility, they are redundant and serve only as associative "tags."
  • WP:BLPCAT: Categorizing living persons by intersecting sensitive identity markers (religion) with political controversies is discouraged. The label "critic" is imprecise, lacks a clear inclusion criterion, and risks misrepresenting subjects.

Recommendation: Delete these categories. The existing parent category, Category:Anti-Zionists, is the appropriate and sufficient venue for grouping these subjects based on their documented political activities.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Biosketch (talkcontribs) 17:21, 23 June 2026 (UTC)reply

  • Comment Some editor programmed the JJMC89 bot to empty the two categories mentioned at the top of this nomination even though this discssion was never closed. This should never had been done and those edits should be reverted and then I'll untag the two categories mentioned. Biosketch, you never tagged these two categories with a CFD notice and I'm sure you didn't notify the category creators. Did you follow the CFD instructions?
Really, all actions that occurred outside of the comments on this discussion page should be undone, this nomination should be withdrawn and a proper CFD discussion set up. And as I said, some editor also used JJMC89 bot to carry their own personal feelings about how this discussion should be closed before consensus was reached. I think that action is worth a block for using JJMC89 bot to carry out their own personal editing tasks. Liz Read! Talk! 07:04, 3 July 2026 (UTC)reply

  • Keep I don’t see how WP:OPINIONCAT applies here. Having said categories help readers find individuals that fall into two independent characteristics- religion and being a critical of Israel (of course only if the info is well-sourced). These categories don't necessarily assume or imply that someone’s religion is the reason for their critical view, but that both characteristics are based. Also, I think that the fact that Wikipedia already has similar intersectional categories (Anti-Zionist Jews and Christian Zionists) points to their relevance and value. Category:Levante UD footballers

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: A "Footballers" category would be better for a multi sport club like Barcelona or Real Madrid, though ironically both clubs categorise their footballers as just "players". Levante appears to be only a football club and there is no ambiguity what its players are playing. Subcategories of Category:Men's footballers in Spain by club look about 80% "players" - may be a case for a bigger discussion. Unknown Temptation (talk) 19:49, 11 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Works about animals playing sports

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: None of these are animals "playing" sports, miscategorization. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 11:03, 11 August 2026 (UTC)reply
How do you mean? Something like Air Bud seems to be abou an animal playing sports, no? Fram (talk) 08:11, 12 August 2026 (UTC)reply
"Playing" sports implies the animal can understand they are participating in a game, as opposed to just being "in" the game.
I suppose it could instead be renamed "Category:Sports films about animals" to assuage this concern, since it does not imply anything about how the animal thinks. Category:Works about animals playing sports should still be merged as a WP:NARROWCAT, with most of its categories being miscategorized. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 10:28, 12 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Again, how is e.g. Air Bud not about an animal playing sports? It's fiction, you know, real animals can not understand this (although even then it is usually said that they play fetch and so on), but in fiction this is no issue. How is Bonzo Goes to College not a film about an animal playing sports? Why would Hockey Homicide or The Olympic Champ not be a work about animals playing sports? [edit]
Nominator's rationale: "Nysa asteroid" is an obsolete term for an asteroid belonging to the group now known as the Nysa–Polana complex. See 44 Nysa and the aforementioned article for an explanation on why "Nysa" is an inaccurate term. I'd say this is an umambiguous move, but I wanted to bring this for discussion because I want someone to systematically change all articles under this category once it gets renamed. Category:Western Australian redirects

Nominator's rationale: Unusual category tree; redirects are generally not categorised by topic, with the exception of Middle-Earth redirects, whose rcats, as of writing this, seem to be at TfD as well though. (Note that this is also the only region-specific subcategory of Category:Geography redirects.) Looking at the members, it does not seem like the categories have been maintained after their creation in 2007. 1234qwer1234qwer4 03:12, 9 August 2026 (UTC)reply

  • yeah na, dont delete there seams to be a lot of pages(about 370 in the two subcats) listed in there that probably should be considered as primary topics rather than be disambiguated. The categories do have a capacity as being useful for having captured something that might have a level ok bulk effort applied. Though the current policy is not to mass move these unnecessarily disambiguated articles as it'll impact thousands of other articles and create one unnecessary unwholely mess of redirects. Category:Hard Rock Cafe

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Alongside changing the parent page for this category from Hard Rock Cafe to Hard Rock International. My reasoning for it; Places in the category, such as Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City, are entirely separate from the cafes; in fact, that location does not have a Hard Rock Cafe. Neither does the former Hard Rock Casino Vancouver or Hard Rock Stadium. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa also does not have a Hard Rock Cafe. Making the category based strictly on the restaurant division is potentially confusing, and it would be better to rename it this way to better reflect and match the pages in this category. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino itself operates separately from the restaurant division. Hard Rock Vault also lacks a cafe, and Hard Rock Beach Club Choctaw was more of a summer-themed bar rather than a traditional cafe. Aspifi (talk | contributions) 15:02, 1 August 2026 (UTC)reply

  • I agree with Marcocapelle. "War on Drugs" is an expression that refers to actions in the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s by police and law enforcement agencies against drug smugglers or distributers. When I see the term "Drug war", I think of disputes between rival drug outfits, as happens in Mexico and Central America. I'm not sure how to make that more clear though. Are there subcategories? Nominator's rationale: manually merge, these aren't articles about terminology as a subject, they rather are articles about subjects in canon law. Move articles to the root category if they aren't already somewhere else in the Canon law of the Catholic Church tree, and uncontainerize the parent category. There is one exception, article List of Catholic canon law legal abbreviations, which should be moved to Category:Catholic terminology too. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:23, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Filipino Resistance activists

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OVERLAPCAT, all articles but one are also in Category:People of the Philippine Revolution and there is no reason to keep these articles apart. The one exception is Aman Dangat, that article just does not fit together with the rest. There is also not an article Filipino Resistance. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:38, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Filipino independence activists

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, largely overlapping categories. All five articles and the subcategory are about people of the Philippine Revolution and there is no reason to keep these specific articles apart. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:26, 30 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Wireless

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: There is not enough distinction between these two categories for both of them to exist. Category:Wireless has most of the articles at present, but Category:Wireless communication has a clearer title. I propose that we merge all the articles there. 2027 by year upmerge

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: I was going to propose this at CFDS under C2F (one eponymous article), but I have some further rationale. Per WP:CRYSTALBALL, we shouldn't expect each of these "2027 by country" subcats to have a bunch of non-eponymous articles and categories before the year in question has even begun. - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat01:36, 7 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Speedy merge per C2F. You did not need to come here; you could have just given your rationale as part of the CfDS nomination. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:09, 7 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Song recordings produced Mel-Man

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Highly unlikely typo. Always comes up first in ABC order results from Hotcat and gets in the way (which probably isn't a good enough reason on its own to delete, but it is very annoying). Was kept after a move to the current redirect target/correct title, but should not have been retained. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 21:46, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:American colonial governors

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: delete, "American" is anachronistic considering the content of the category. Subcategories are already in Category:Spanish colonial governors and administrators if applicable. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:02, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Delete this is a merging of colonial governers for various colonial powers because the placea they were governors of at least in part later became part of the United States. Some of them were colonial governors in areas outside the US while the US existed. This includes officials of the French, Spanish, English/British and Russian Empire governments. It treats the current boumdaroes of the US as if they are the right, proper and correct boundaries. Ignoring the fact that these boundaries were brought about by historic events, including compromises in which people accepted less expamsive boundaroes than thry in some ways believed were the ideal boundaries. This category imposes an idea both spatially and temporarily beyomd where it actually existed. We should delete the category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:29, 7 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:34th century BC

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only contents are the main article (which is nominated for merging) and a single archaeological site (the Ashleypark Burial Mound) dated to this time period. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 17:49, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Fictional kobudōka

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: After removing two articles that didn't mention kobudō, what's left are four articles that mention the term only in the infobox, possibly based on WP:OR. I don't think they are otherwise categorized as Japanese martial artists, except in other subcategories that are nominated at CfD. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 17:23, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:Kobudoka by nationality

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only content is Japan and a Japanese prefecture (which shouldn't be a direct member). Both categories are also nominated for speedy renaming to correct the spelling of kobudō. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 17:20, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Category:TOC tracking on category pages where PAGESINCATEGORY returns zero

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary tracking categories; the use of Module:HTMLDecode has largely fixed the bug this was meant to be tracking. BlasterOfHouses (HouseBlaster's alt • talk • he/they) 14:34, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Automatic category TOC tracking categories

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: The granular detail in these tracking categories is unnecessary, and they create lots of category loops. This proposal would simplify down to separate categories for whether or not {{Automatic category TOC}} is used, without the intricate detail. Category:Indigenous languages of Central Amazonia

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: This and the various other region-based categories of Category:Indigenous languages of South America are poorly defined on the wiki if they are defined at all. They also do not align with region-based categories used on Category:Indigenous peoples of South America, though most of those at least are defined a bit better. Arctic Circle System (talk) 08:32, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply
The categorization of all these wiki categories was based on the cultural areas of human groups in South America. This is like, for instance, the North American Southwest. I got them from professor Terrance Kaufman who specializes on indigenous languages. Note the cultural areas originate primarily from the time before the European invasions. It's just where people were distributed who tend to have similar cultural behaviors, material technology, etc. They may be heavily influenced by geography since that is a natural thing that restricts interactions between peoples. They seem to 'not align with region-based categories' because you don't about the cultural areas. So, they are actually based on regions. These regions, of course, probably do not align much with boundaries of modern nation-states since those are later regions defined by the migrants from across the ocean. If they are 'poorly defined,' then I guess wikipedia has no information about South American cultural areas (to its detriment). ishwar  (speak) 17:31, 6 August 2026 (UTC)reply
How are these regions defined? What sources exist about them? Where do they start and end? I would appreciate some more information about these cultural regions. Arctic Circle System (talk) 02:04, 10 August 2026 (UTC)reply
