Function details: Conflict of interest requests are the most common type of edit requests on Wikipedia. However, they are frequently submitted under the "request edit" template by editors who don't know that this template is for semi-protected requests only. While some other editors and I have been correcting this, a bot could do the job much faster.
This bot crawls the table of open semi-protected edit requests at User:AnomieBOT/SPERTable (later updates will remove this reliance and the bot will compile its own list). It checks whether each open request is actually for a protected page. If an edit request uses the wrong template, the bot will search for common phrases that declare a conflict of interest. If the request is identified as a COI request, the request is recategorized and a note is posted in the request's discussion. The bot will also refuse to edit war when it detects its own talk page note. A manually approved revision from the bot is visible here:

- That was me manually testing an unrelated script (edit: specifically FlammableBot task 2) by having it suggest changes that I then approved. The bot didn't do anything. FlammablePizza (talk) 20:38, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

- This has not been discussed nor does it appear to be necessary, but I am also a bit concerned about the bot operator not recognising there is a category specifically for this issue (i.e. they're making it way harder than necessary). Primefac (talk) 18:00, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
